This may be an odd question, but how do you overcome superstitions, particularly horsey ones? Three years ago today I got into a kind of bad horse accident, where I fell directly on my head. I cut my head badly and still have the scar, and am very fortunate that I had no other complications. I ride with a helmet now and definitely advocate them, but I did not have one on when I had my fall. Now, I'm almost afraid to do anything horse related on today (April 18) because of that experience. I recall it vividly and it still scares me, especially to realize how much worse it could have been. I have some kind of a mental block about today, and I'm trying to overcome it. Any advice, tips, or "suck it up buttercups" are appreciated. :)

Awww your a sweety, and thank you for the kind words  I just hate it when someone has a hard time at doing what they love. At least your wearing a helmet and trying, just baby steps for now and you will be just fine I know its hard not thinking about the accident.

Honestly, I wouldn't think of it as a superstition. I have a problem with today's date, as well. I pretty much won't leave the house on April 18th, if I can at all help it. I know that some may find my reasoning silly, or say that I need to get over it. Instead, I choose to see it as a day of reflection.

Big hugs!!!!   Do you have a friend  you could ride with??   I have one that I know would be saddling my horse and saying "get on I will be right here with you but you are doing this".   No shame in how you feel, accidents and what it's are scary.

I had my big horse accident on November 6th, 2006. I decided to think about it in terms of odds. I had my BIG accident happen and now odds are I won't have another one. Kind of like "lightening doesn't strike twice". I don't know how true it is but it helped me. Also that I could get hurt in lots of other ways just minding my own business like walking down the sidewalk, car accident, trip and fall off my own porch and I was not going to stop doing something I love because I "might" get hurt.

I went back and ran at the same arena, at the same race (close to the same date) a couple of years after the accident. I decided for other reasons that I didn't need to do that again.

Good Luck!

I absolutely refuse to get out of bed on the 4th of any month. At this point, everyone around me knows not to expect me to do anything those days. I had a run of about 8 months where I had bad things (deaths in the family, major accidents, loss) all happen on the 4th of the month. Now I don't even chance it! Hugs for you, for being willing to help yourself do better!

Examine why you're scared and decide if what you want to do is worth overcoming your fears.  If you're going to ride horses, then wrecks happen.  The question then becomes how you choose to go forward after the wreck.  You've protected your head by choosing to wear a helmet going forward - so be confident in that.

Life makes some days extremely difficult, it just does.  Live long enough and you're going to lose people and animals on different days - some of those will be devestating.  It sucks.  It's just another day and you don't allow that to take control of your life and rob you of joy.  We're fortunate enough to still be here, so don't waste the time we have worrying.  It's nothing more than a date on a calendar.

Just get out there and and make a point of doing something you enjoy with your horse today.  Replace that old memory with something positive.  It's your choice how you decide to go forward - don't let this control you.  You can overcome it.

Just baby steps, my friend.

I had a gelding that was green broke. Decided he loved to buck. Out of the blue. We would be going along and having a great ride and he would break in two for no reason. I had a couple very hard falls. I love riding. But now the only horse I can feel normal riding is my mare. I have a new gelding that I adore. But I find myself to be terrified to ride him. He's never done anything wrong, but he's a horse. And the unpredictability of the last horse is enough to give me anxiety with the new one.

But baby steps... And prayer. Hugs.

Thank you all for the kind thoughts, they are very helpful.  I love being on and around my horse and I'm cool with riding on pretty much any other day, it is just still hard for me on that one particular day. Thank you all very much.

Which one? I see there are two books titled Mind Gym, one by Sebastian Bailey and the other by Gary Mack.  I'm guessing the one by Sebastion Bailey, as he is a PhD and it is about positive thinking? But I wasn't sure as the one by Gary mack has to do with athletes believing in themselves. Thanks!

I am very superstitious (probably OCD but I don't like to admit it) and I don't do a lot of things because bad things seem to happen when I do them (i.e wear turquoise fleece, wear matching socks, ect) and I know they're dumb and I do other OCD type things in my everyday life but I pick one thing that I would like to change and stop doing it. Some things I just like to do and don't hinder my life so I don't mind doing them but there were others that I just slowly started phasing out. When something bad didn't happen I knew I was over it. Now, I kind of think it gives me (us) something to blame maybe? You not riding for example, If something was to happen again on that date would give you a reason to say, see, it's the date it's bad luck. Have a bunch of people around and get on an easy horse and hey, even just ride for 2 min, it still counts as riding! I like Cash's advice though, the chances of another big one and on that date are slim :) You got yours out of the way, go enjoy your horses!

Are you still riding the same horse? If so try running another horse you feel safe on, run slower horses and work back up to the faster one. You may need to sale the horse you got hurt on and go with one that you feel completely safe on. Good luck hope it gets better for you. Good luck.

I am riding the same horse, but what happened ws not her fault, just kind of a freak think that happened. But I'm fine with riding and even running except on THAT DAY, yet. That horse is staying with me for a long time to come yet, I've never had such a guud horse and I realize that bad stuff can happen even with the good ones.

And I'm working on getting over my superstitions. I used to think that having 8 as part of it (like the day the 8th, 18th, or 28th) had something to do with it (for example I had a flat tire on the 28th of January, so the 8 in the date had to be the cause), but now I'm realizing its not so, dad had a flat tire yesterday and there was no 8 as part of the date. I'm beginning to realize that stuff happens, good or bad, no matter what the day.

I was hoping someone could tell me the correct author for the book Mind Gym, so I could look up the correct one, as it seems there are two books out with that same title. :)

Thanks so much everyone!
