this indicates what? lope nice circles, does everything well, but when asked for more speed on the pattern is when i get the bunny hop thing and doesn't reach underneath himself.

Hocks and stifles. Sometimes just hocks. Sore hocks can make stifles sore.

Sounds like Hocks, Stifles, Kissing Spine, SI Joint or Hip.  The only thing I can tell you for sure is to stop working barrels immediately and get the diagnosis.  Speed is the problem because that forces the most weight on the injured body part.

Hope all turns out well and easily fixed.

You might also try to loosen your curb strap. I have a horse that did that because he felt trapped by the bit.

If this is a young horse.. help him by teaching him to collect his body, warm up and have him collect and teach him to collect at the rate point. If hes a bit further along and still green it can also be from harder or unfamiliar ground conditions. He may not want to get in the ground if it doesnt hold him 100% = lacking confidence/experience

Agree on the ground, if it's hard and horse cant in the ground that would cause them to hop are kinda bounce around the barrels, super hard on their bodys. What kind of ground are you running on, does your horse do this at all races?

If you are sure it's not a pain issue, you might want to look at reign length. I got into the habit to hold on to my geldings head, and he would start to bunny hop. Might not make sense, but when i moved my hands more to the middle of the reigns he stopped doing it.
