Saw the other thread on shoes and made me think of this. Thoughts, pros/cons of using clips on horseshoes?

Normally, horses that are shod with clips (toes, side, quarter, etc..) are done so for a reason. Does your horse have specific hoof issue?

use clips occasionally. Mostly on horses who may shear a shoe off laterally(hard turns)

Horse has no issues. We started using a new ferrier and he wanted/likes to use them.

I guess barrel racing and pole bending classify as hard turns?

This is just an opinion...but if I got a new farrier that wanted/liked to use clips...that would lead me to believe he isn't good at setting a shoe therefore needs the extra "staying power" of a clip...but I am skeptical of everyone.

Using side clips, if not done properly, can lead to hoof wall damage also. And setting a front clip with hot work takes even more know-how...so I'd stick with what you were doing, as long as it's working, and not change because that's what he "prefers".

Clips help hold shoes on for horses that twist out of them, like rotating while the foot is on the ground.  They will not help if your horse pulls shoes, like stepping on them or sucking them off in mud.

my gelding used to have to have clips on the back. he would stop/slide so hard that he would slide out of his shoes. his shoes would be back a half inch from where they were set with the nails kinds of stretched out LOL

I believe he knows his business. He is from a different part of the country (new England), and he has a back ground with horses on the track and hunter/jumpers. So I did not know if it were a regional or different event type thing. He uses hot shoes with side/quarter clips.

He watched all of our horses walk and run before putting shoes on or doing any work. We had one horse with continuous foot problems, and since he has worked with her this past year the problems completely went away.

It has been 4 weeks since the horse we ran today feet were shod and they look good. Thanks for all the input. I had never used them and was curious.

When i lived in TN the farriers used to complain that it was a northeastern thing. I grew up with clips on shoes (NY) and didnt really think anything of it. Currently back in NY and my farrier doesnt use them. Whether its because hes originally from midwest or what, im happy with how he does their feet. My biggest issue with shoes with clips is if they clip/pull them off it usually takes chunks of their feet with it.

Growing up in Europe every shoe there had clips. I really didn't know they came without until I moved to Tx... lol. I guess it is just an "English riding" thing...

I had a barrel horse who always threw his shoes out in pasture. New shoer recommended clips so I went with it. Next race I attended he clipped himself and ended up ripping his shoe AND half of his hoof off. So no more.

Quarter clipping shoes help a thin/weak wall to hold a shoe in place.

This is the reason I don't like them.  When I used sidewinders (come with clips) I made my farrier cut them off.  I don't think he liked that very much, lol.
