Location: North Kakalaki | I have accepted a job in Wisdom and My family (the 4 of us) will be moving to the area in about a month. Just trying to see if anyone here may have some leads on housing with acreage for several horses. Looking for anything within an hour commute of Wisdom. So Dillon, Polaris, Jackson, Wise River, Divide and Darby are probably my options. Ranch housing would also be an option as we could trade out some ranch work, fencing, haying, cooking, cleaning, etc if needed. Basically just looking at any options for now. Willing to sign a 1 yr lease. I konw the rental market seems a bit slim for this type of property but figured I would give it a shot here
Also What Junior rodeo associations are in the area?

| Hi we are in Hamilton and my parents are in Darby so welcome to the area . I am not sure on rentals around wisdom but I might know of someone who would have an idea. We have a jr rodeo association over here in the valley not real big but fun. I can get you there information, we also have a gymkhana club and jackpots races. You can check the Darby Rodeo association on facebook if you are on there they have several events. I will pm you my phone number so I can try and get you a couple of phone numbers. |

| You probably won't want to commute from any of those towns in the winter! There is the Southwest Youth Rodeo Assn that is very active in the summer. |

Location: In my own little world | If you have Facebook send a PM to Mykal Kirkpatrick or Lynn Hirschy. Both are ranch families in the Big Hole Valley and would have any leads that are out there if there are any. I hope you like winter!! |

Location: Where the buffalo roam | Diana Morris is in the Butte area and is a real estate agent (and a barrel racer). She may know of some rentals. Maybe post on the Big Sky Barrels Facebook page. |

Location: North Kakalaki | Thanks for the info and leads, No doubt it will be a big change for our family. I would like to think we are somewhat prepared for what winter brings as we spend most of our winters now in Snowshoe WV. Granted the winter in Montana will be much longer. |

Location: MT | Hope you like the cold and snow...and great big mosquitoes! Wisdom is one of the coldest places in the lower 48. My folks lived in both Jackson and Wisdom when I was pretty little. They now live over the hill in Dillon. Coldest they've had was -56F, and that is without wind. Guessing you will be working for the FS or the NPS? If you commute from Dillon, you will have 2 passes (Badger Pass and Carroll Hill) to cross each day. If you commute from Darby you will have to come up over Lost Trail Pass. If it were me, I'd be looking for somewhere in the Big Hole Valley itself. Wisdom itself seems to be one of the coldest spots in the valley. The cold air really settles there by the river.
On the bright side, it is GORGEOUS!

Location: Montana | I'm on the other end of the state but welcome to Montana!
I used to spend a week a year, in the winter, in Wisdom auditing. We had to stay in a Wise River motel because they would open for us in the winter. Sort of. Not so much with turning on the heat but that's neither here nor there now.
Really liked it there! Your horses will eat way more hay, otherwise, it's not that bad! Winter is just something you get used to. Take up skijoring!
I would suggest being careful with the commute distance though. There is not just the winter, but honestly we dodged annoyed moose on the road commuting to Wise River. Really. That is not like hitting a whitetail.
That idea about asking on MT facebook pages is a good one. There are a bunch!

A ways further south of Lolo, komet, but I'm guessing you probably know that...
To the OP: A lot of snow down there and very cold. Like someone else said, you will most likely want to find a place pretty close to where you are going to work as the commute will sometimes be impassable and impossible in the winter time if you get too far away. |

I wouldn't say a LOT of snow.... Most of the time you can see over it if you are standing on the back of your horse... |

Location: North Kakalaki | I know it would make sense to live close to work, if I could find a place that had a set up for horses. If we did live in wisdom, my high school age son would have to ride the bus to Dillon every day or may have to do the home school thing. Would be nice to find something in the middle, but at this point we are looking for anything in the general area. |
