I'm riding a 4 year old long backed wide load who is a bit front endy. I am currently riding in a d ring. He's doing ok but he needs something different. I've worked hard on his basics and he's really working but I need something that will not stiffen him but help him some. All suggestions will be appreciated!!

I have a little english corrector bit that has no shank. I really ride them up into my seat and push them up into my center of gravity say whoa and sit and then pick up on the reins for my final cue. If the horse gets a bit heavy I will pick up on each rein independent in a smooth see saw way and get them to back up onto those haunches that they don't want to be using. I "force" the use of the haunches by the back.

He's been vetted. It is not a sore issue. He is a big heavy boy.

He is almost a foot and a half wide between his front legs. He is a real heavy horse.

My 15 year old gelding is built with a huge shoulder and a heavy underline, he is however short backed but given the option he moves front endy naturally. He does however also have a low hock set which helps some if you keep him lifted and really pay attention to his shoeing. He does have a tendency to get sore in his shoulders and his neck if we do a lot of long trotting unless I work really hard to do the long trotting with his head low and nose in. I have cut and done reined cow horse classes on him along with Ranch Versatility too, again if you dont' do the work he wants to be front endy, its how he is built. He is a free runner with a ton rate from the cow work. He will run an honest upright pattern in a snaffle 3-4 times and then start getting front endy/heavy say on the 5th run. I normally use an Ed Wright Pretzel on him just to keep him lifted without having to mess with him too much. A couple weeks ago I used Professional Choice low port derby bit on him and added a nose band from Sharon Camerillo collection, little less bit, more nose. He hadn't made a run in a year due to some foot issues, ran the fastest time of the day by 7 tenths at a local jackpot. Felt like I got the lifted shoulder, driving from the rear without the whoa I was getting on the backside where I tend to panic and pull.

I ride my big heavy long-backed mare in an Ed Wright lifter - the long shank three piece mouth - during the week. She's very light mouthed so I rarely touch it but it helps pick her up when she wants to bury her front end and dump forward. We trot over poles, do a zillion and a half transitions, and stop and back up.

I run her in that lifter or a chain nose hackamore. The hack keeps me from handling her face too much. She's very close to automatic so when I get handsy she'll waste time shaking her head at me.

Between chiro and myself. Before I found that he was interferring with himself at the long trot, he toes out, he hated to long trot, it was an absolute chore to get him into a long trot and or do more than shuffle his feet, you had to pump like you were pumping a bike. So I rarely long trotted because it was such a pain. Once we figured out his interference issues and I started using leather splint boots and he would actually long trot like a champ he started coming up tight in his shoulders and neck, figured it was from not doing a lot of it and he'd work up to it. I don't know if he just didn't build those early muscle memory but to this day he will come up tight thru his shoulders and neck if we do a lot of long trotting especially if I don't keep him framed doing it. Chiro just advised doing enough of it to help with his top line and not over work it, the benefits didn't outweigh the set backs.

Connie Combs teaches to stop your horse behind the barrel standing up square and then move on. It teaches the horse to use their hind end. My mare is going to boot camp tonight to work on that. We've been off since November and I think she's forgotten a few things.
