I got a new bridle months ago and haven't used it yet. I really liked it so my mom got it for me for my bday. Well it is really wide and when I put it on my mare, I'm afraid it will start rubbing her eye. Maybe it just needs to be broke in? I've always just had a thin leather bridle so I've never had this problem before

That is good that you are aware of that.  I have seen a horse running to the first barrel at the NFR with the headstall pulled into the horse's eye - for several rounds.  Some of those headstalls are really pretty, but watch where they hang and what type of bit you put on them...and then each horse's head can be different, as well.

If the bit has a longer "purchase", it will push the headstall forward when you pull back.

Try it and see how it does.  Have someone video you riding for a while, turning etc. if you are worried about it.

My gelding cannot use a "belt" style headstall for that particular reason, he has very large eyes and they seem to be set very wide to boot. Every Belt style headstall we tried on him came dang close to his eye.

I took leather (shoestring size you can get at Tandy Leather) and ran it through the single ear and under the jaw.  It kept my headstall out of the eye.
I have also used a wider piece of leather and just tied it off or you could make a throat latch, just get the buckle and keeper.  Tandy Leather has all of the material you would need.

I've thought about doing something pike that. I love the set. Its hand painted with red and teal. My made has a very small head and I'm very cautious with any new tack and how it fits. I might just try to sell it and get something that is smaller.
