Who rides on the ball of the foot? Who pushes the foot home? I'm bored at work and just wondering.

Call me dumb, but I've never heard the term 'pushes the foot home.' What do you mean by that?

Dunno what "pushing the foot home" means, but I always ride on the ball of my foot. Habit after 30some years of English I guess.

Same. My English habits are hard to break, feels so wrong having my foot any other way.

Ball of my foot schooling and trail riding. All the way home in a run otherwise I lose my stirrups.

I ride with my stirrup just behind the ball of my foot. Not on the ball, not all the way home. In the middle I suppose.

I RIDE on the balls of my feet. I RUN with my feet shoved all the way into the stirrup. It was very difficult for me to learn to run this way but adopted the habit after a reining trainer had me stand up with my feet in each position. When you stand on the balls of your feet it tends to push your body forward. When you stand up with your feet shoved all the way in, you tend to stand up straight.

Since I am a bigger rider, it helps to keep my body mass centered.

As soon as my run is done the rubber bands come off (have had to left my entire foot and leg to avoid hitting on my old, close turning mare) and my feet go back where they "belong".

I think it's slang for having your boot all the way into the stirrup. I put my weight into the ball of my stirrup for a long time but I'm actually working on having it a little more back after watching and reading a few videos/articles from Sheri Cervi and Charmayne James.

I ride on the balls of my feet. My mom grew up both showing and rodeoing and always drilled foot, leg, hand & body position as well as posture. Between that and riding English as well growing up I tend to make runs looking like I'm in the show ring, lol. If I haven't run barrels in awhile it always takes me a few runs to get into jockey mode. And even when I've found my jockey groove, I've still never mastered having my feet deep in the stirrups. It feels really awkward & unnatural to me. Because of this, I do have to use rubber bands during runs to keep from blowing my stirrups. My boyfriend grew up riding a lot of outlaws that people brought their family for retraining, he has no problem keeping his feet deep in the stirrups, lol.

Ah ok thank you! During a run, that's how I have my feet positioned. Otherwise, I lose my stirrups half of the time. Used to ride WP for years, so I ride on the ball of my foot any other time. I just can't not....lol.

Interesting......I read this thinking "There is NO way I could shove my foot all the way through the stirrup and still be able to run." I went and looked at some pictures and I'd say 80% of them I have my ball of the foot placed on the stirrup, but there are some where my foot at some point went through more.

I had to Google some images of Sherry, and sure enough her foot is pushed through. Kind of neat, stirrup placement isn't something I ever really thought about, it just feels the most natural to ride on the ball of my foot.

See. It was a good topic for boredom. I try to stay on the balls, but they go deep on their own during a run.

I ride on the ball of my feet all the time and even during a run, it just feels right, and I have the best balance. I would like to try Sherry Cervi's method though, I've had troubles losing my stirrups every once in a while.

I ride with the balls of my feet while just messing around and trail riding, but running barrels my feet are deep in my stirrups.

Balls when just riding.  My rubber bands tend to cause my foot to be all the way to the heel when I run.  I never was a fan of rubber bands but started having to use them the past few years.  Guess I'm getting old.

^^ This. I ride every day on the balls of my feet. But years of showing cutters has me shoving my feet as far in as I can when I'm showing, or now, running.
