| Gov. Mary Fallin wants to tax horses in the state of Oklahoma to make up for a $1.3 billion shortfall, yet they still give millions in subsidies to windmills and the Oklahoma Thunder Professional Basketball team. The horse industry is already contributing their share to the govt. (Read Quarter Horse News article below for some amazing numbers. ) https://www.facebook.com/bhwnews/?fref=tsLet us know what you think! Please be respectful. ... You can call too: Governor Mary Fallin (405 ) 521-2342 (405 ) 521-2342 I expect her line will be very busy. Keep trying. |

Location: Oklahoma | I would think this would be awfully hard to enforce. It might work for collections at auctions, etc., but I would think at private treaty sales it would have to be something like a voluntary contribution. |

| There are so many groups with tax exemtion its crazy. Here in Utah the Credit Union industry Tax exemption totals about $25M a year. The credit unions look and act exactly like a bank, except they pay NO income tax at all. But I'm sure the legistlature will propose a donut tax next year, because they just dont think its fair that donut eaters shouldn't pay their fair share. Its all about lobbyist and who you know. Isn't America great!

Yes, ma'am, we have sales tax on everything. In my small town in Oklahoma, the sales tax is 10% on just about everything, including groceries. The opening of casinos and the sales of lottery tickets were supposed to help the state immensely, especially with proceeds going to education, but apparently that hasn't worked out very well. |

Location: Oklahoma | Yes Oklahoma does have a sales tax. This is the first I've heard about taxes on horses. My question is where the heck did all the money go to. Last year they were hiring new teachers and raising salaries (which they well deserve) and now no money, laying off teachers, cutting school programs and now they want to tax our horses. What's next ~~~ taxing our key strokes on our computers ? |

Location: Tulsa, Ok | The huge budget shortfall in Okla. is mostly due to production tax collections, because those taxes are based on the price of oil. Not the first time this has happened, but our "leaders" are obviously to short-sighted to plan ahead. Instead of trying to accumulate a surplus for a rainey day, they gave an income tax cut to the upper tax brackets and gazillions in corporate welfare. Why worry about education, child welfare, the elderly, the uninsured when they can give the gift that keeps on giving -- to the people that will fund their election campaigns. |

Location: Jersey Girl | In NJ the sale of a horse is taxable if you are in the horse selling business. A regular horse owner that that sells a horse does not have to collect sales tax because that is considered a "casual" sale.

This would be my assumption, and according to articles I've read on the proposal that's one of the biggest fears. It would only make sense for them to move to another state to avoid the sales tax. |
