Yes. The winner of the 1st race and a filly with a broken cannon bone in the 4th race.

I remember a Breeder's Cup where a horse named Timely Rider and a beautiful filly (dang can't remember her name, somebody help me) broke down the same day.  It was awful and I refused to watch horse racing for a long time after that.

Go for Wand........it was in 1987.  She ran loose on the track with her leg broken before they could catch her.

I don't know the statistics, but remember there are freak instances every day when dealing with horses.  One of these was a 9 yo that died from an apparent heart attack, there was also a barrel horse that very tragically died yesterday from what seems to be a heart attack.  It was devestating.  I've also seen horses break legs at team ropings and barrel races - sometimes you never know exactly what caused it.  Until they determine if there was any wrongdoing on the trainer's parts, lets not throw them under the bus just yet.  I've had a rope horse step wrong leaving the box and break a front leg....it was horrible, but sometimes accidents just happen.  Look at the sheer number of horses running.

Exactly what they said! Its sad that bandwagon fans watch at best 3 races per year and see this, then decide to share it all over facebook for the world to see. 90% of people don't get to see how well these horses are taken care of. Many don't see the trainers out there who are going broke to save and rehome their horses. All they get to see if the negative because no one shares the positive.

No body is throwing anybody under the bus on here, no trainers came up, didnt say anything about wrong doings. No body said anything about the trainers.

Exactly........nothing changes the fact that a lot is being asked of two and three years olds, some only months from being weaned off their mothers.  The sport is beautiful in many ways but a lot of ugly things happen that we don't see.

Not saying they don't - but both of these horses were older.  The filly that broke her leg was 4 and the other was 9.

A term that is used alot is "horse took a bad step".  I personally don't believe that.  I believe there are underlying factors that contribute to breakdowns whether it be tendon fatigue, toe grabs, micro fractures, track conditions, clipping heels, etc.  I've seen breakdowns and each one makes me sick to my stomach.  I don't give my horses bronchodilators because of side effects that may affect the heart.  My niece has 12 racehorses and not one runs on the needle.  The only vitamin supplement they get is Platinum Performance.  I'm not saying that the horses who died at Pimlico had any medications in their systems or underlying factors that were detectable.  I hope the necropsy results will be released to the public so we can learn from it.  UC Davis did a study on colydar fractures which they found were associated with toe grabs that put more stress on the cannon bone.  My brother-in-law is a trainer and is a great legman.  Training for over 30 years and no breakdowns.  If he suspects something might be going on, he will x-ray as a precaution.  My husband told me he can tell if a horse is going to breakdown in front of him.  He was in a race and a bug was on a horse in front of him.  Jack saw the horse's tail twitching in front of him so he moved his horse from behind it.  Horse brokedown.  Jack said that when he sees the horse's tail twitching, the animal is in some kind of distress.  I have a video of my husband on a horse that broke down going into the first turn in the Yellow Ribbon on the turf at Santa Anita.  If it wasn't for my husband's quick action, that horse would have gone down.  Jack stopped that horse like a reiner.  You could see Jack holding the horse on the side of the track after the race.  Horse was saved.  Sometimes pulling up when you feel a weird step will save a horse from a catastrophic injury.  Sometimes not.  I hope there is much more research being done to help prevent what happened this weekend.  I don't want to see anymore breakdowns and I don't want to see anymore jocks getting killed or paralyzed.

On another note, Nyquist spiked a 102 fever.  No doubt going 22, he bled.  Still pointed to Belmont but won't ship right away.
