Location: Somewhere around here | Lets say you're looking at a horse to buy but the current owners lost the papers, although they know her registered name and date of birth. Is there a way to retrieve the horses papers from AQHA? |

Location: Arizona | There is a Duplicate Certificate pdf form on the AQHA site. The last recorded owner fills it out, draws the horse's markings on the second page, encloses ID pictures, and pays $30 (If a current member). As long as the people that lost the papers had transferred the horse in their name it shouldn't be a big deal. However, if they lost the papers before transferring, you're going to have to track down the previous owners until you find the last one recorded with AQHA, and then pray they are willing and able to fill out the request form. If you offer to pay the fees yourself up front you can usually get it done, but sometimes you never can tell about people. You can also send in the transfer form & fee at the same time so the duplicate certificate can be sent directly to you once the paperwork is in order.

The trick is to track down the last registered owner BEFORE you buy the horse. Could be a lost cause. |

(If they will give you the hroses registered name, you can look it up on AQHA's website and make sure the seller is listed as the current owner.) Because if they aren't, chances are it will be much harder to get new papers.

Location: Alberta, Canada | I lost a set of papers. The horse was in my name and I have a photocopy. Luckily, he's a gelding and when I sold him I was completely up front about the situation and was willing to do all the paperwork at my cost if it was important to them to have them.
You do need a commissioner to verify your identity in order to get a replica. It's not expensive but can be a pain to get the papers filled out if youre busy and work full time like myself :) |
