Why do you feel you have leave the O ring? If your horse is working good in it just keep them in it. If you do change the choices will depend on the areas you think he needs help on-- control, lift, bend, etc.

Sweet Six or Jr. Cowhorse for my crew.

If you still want to stay in a similar catagory I've used D rings or you can change up the mouthpiece if you feel you don't have enough "bite" for the horse.

Short shank Ed Wright for me.  Same theory as the Jr. Cowhorse, but the Ed has a bit more purchase and is a more balanced feeling bit to me.  I also like a Loomis sometimes in between the o ring and the curb bit depending on the horse.  If the horse is really loose and rubber bandy, I may move to something that doesn't have any gag and has a more solid mouth like a port bit with a short, swivel shank.

This! My 12 yr old has never been ran in more then a snaffle. My 7 yr old runs him now, still in a snaffle. Twisted so she has a little more control but I ran him in a smooth. He's no slow poke either, 1D/2D with both of us.
