Location: Somewhere around here | Had anyone seen an increase in males joining jackpots in your area more? I've noticed an increase in bigger races but I live in a small town and haven't seen any race...yet. I'd love to see more honestly but I wonder if it's going to take a while for barrels to be deemed more of a sport for everybody instead of just "ladies barrel racing". |

Location: Arkansas | There are several guys that run in our area, but I can't say it's necessarily an increase---these same men have been running since we got involved. And some of them come to take the money!!

Location: KS | There will be a little increase in the future, as I'm going to teach my son to barrel race. Haha! But only if he wants to. |

Location: Mississippi | I haven't really noticed an increase, but my husband barrel races. It's a sport we can share and enjoy together. I do wish that people would consider the men when choosing awards or designing t-shirts, etc. It's no fun for a guy to get an award that was chosen or designed for a woman; it's hard enough being in the minority of a mostly female populated sport... |

| Here in SOuthern California we have about 15-ish guys ( Including myself) who run barrels. At the big futurities and stuff back east I think there are a lot more. They are totally accepted out here. I really don't think its an acceptance thing anymore, just less guys interested in it. Kind of like women are more than welcome to enter and earn their cards in ANY PRCA event but you just don't see that many female bull riders ( A few) and I have never seen a female steer wrestler because their probably just isint that much interest. |

Now that you mention it, very true!!! I do not ride like a mad man, I'm very quiet and I can name a few others here same way but yea, a lot of them get after it!! |

| My hubby barrel races, but not as often as I do. He will hit the bigger (3 day) shows but usually stays home from the local ones and works. I think he enjoys the socializing and weekend away from home aspect of it, but doesn't get too wrapped up in the competition side of it. He does really well (and out runs me WAY too often LOL) but I don't think he gets wrapped up in it emotionally like us women do ;)
The majority of the men up here are good seated, quiet handed riders.

Location: Bastrop, Texas | I have to admit that I'm a little self-conscious when I am one of very few men who enter jackpots in Texas, mainly because of the stereotypes of men who barrel race. Sometimes I'm the only man entered. I don't dwell on it, but it's there. If I mutter something about it to my wife, she just says, "Oh stop....the only one who thinks about it is you!" We have friends who are good horsemen and I'm pretty sure they could do well in the sport, and I try to push them into trying it. They think about it for a bit, but they dismiss the notion eventually. One guy is pretty accomplished in cutting, and another is an equine dentist and a good hand in his own right. I've seen him take horses around the barrels, and he would need some coaching, but he has all the tools. He's raised a number of top caliber horses.
In Caldwell, we sometimes go to jackpots put on by "Ride Like a Girl" productions. Now THAT bugs me, but I enter anyway. I usually grumble about that name, and the announcer shows her sense of humor when she announces "Runs like a dude", if I happen to pick up a check. |

| Ive seen an increase at 200+ races. There's 1 or2 locally but they race because their wives do. Seems to be more common back east? |

Good guy, and a heck of a good hand to boot! Seems like he just enters as an afterthought! |

Location: Bastrop, Texas | Bob Manor is over 80 years old. He is still one of the best hands anywhere. Just an excellent, quiet rider who has a great seat and soft hands, and his horses are very quiet and disciplined. Don't believe me? Here he is making a 19 second pole run look like a walk in the park. I'll admit, he was a youngster here.....about 75.
If you want a real treat, take a look at this, and remember it next time you wonder if you are too old to compete:

Bear, thats why I have never hauled to TX to run cans, I am conscious about what others think as well. lol Shouldnt bother me but at some level it does. Out here in CA its no big deal what so ever. I would say 90% of the guys who run out here are in fact gay but its not a big deal. TX might be a little scary. I remember long time ago I ran at a race in Wyoming on my way some place else and Oh man, a guy running barrels was not the best idea. |

| I've entered one barrel race since I was a kid in 4H. It was a fundraiser and the pot was for men only. I don't think I would ever enter a real race...for several reasons. |

Yeah, and I like pretty tack and pink shirts to boot! How do you think I feel? LOL.
That's OK.....I get to watch hot chicks like my wife run barrels and warm up next to them and flirt. Nothing sexier or prettier than a woman on a horse. They all look pretty, for some reason. Guys don't know what they're missing. |
