| QUESTION:
Do you remove your cowboy hat during the national anthem at a barrel race or rodeo?
I do. However, I notice that most women do not. I am almost always the only female to remove my hat. Is there a reason why men are expected to remove their hat but women are not?
Please enlighten me. |

| I googled it..... Here's what the general consensus is.
"Men are expected to remove their hats during the playing of the National Anthem. A woman may leave her hat on during the playing of The National Anthem when indoors, unless it is considered unisex like a baseball cap. When wearing such a unisex cap, a woman should follow the same guidelines as for men.”
It originated from the military, men were only allowed in the military. So women removing their hats was considered disrespectful because they don't wear a uniform or have the right of passage. (JMO) |

| Women's hats USED to be a part of their outfit and were often pinned on. Ever see a hat pin? Lethal weapon. It was impossible to get their hat situated on their head again. Today many girls have their hats on so they will not come off when they ride and again it is not easy to get them situated the way they had them. |

| So cowboy hat is unisex and should be removed per Google instructions...? That is my takeaway. |

| Depends, I used to rodeo queen and your hat definitely did NOT leave your head, it was a part of your outfit and often was almost glued to your head with hairspray and nailed on with bobby pins lol. Not to mention the crown very much made it a ladies hat and not unisex. Honestly I still don't remove my hat for the national anthem, I was always raised with women leave them on and men take them off. It's traditional. If another lady chose to remove her hat I wouldn't care, it's just not what I do, but I've seen both. That said my boys are being raised to take off their hats, open doors, and kill spiders for the women in their lives. The first two because I refuse to accept that manners and chivalry have gone out of style, the last one because spiders are icky and give me heebie jeebies |

Location: "...way down south in the Everglades..." | What shocks me is the amount of MEN that don't take off their hats at all sorts of events (baseball, rodeos, etc.) So unbelievably disrespectful.
The only time I don't take off my hat is when I am on my horse, but I stop my horse and face the flag and put my hand over my heart. Any other time if I'm on the ground or sitting in the bleachers, regardless if it's a baseball cap or cowgirl hat...it comes off. I don't care how bad my hair looks, it's respect IMO. |

Location: Willows, CA | From a mans point of view I feel this. A man always stops what he is doing, stands if he is sitting, removes his hat and puts his right hand on his heart. Indoors, outdoors whatever. A man that is too busy or too stupid to do this is an ass. Women do not need to remove cover of any kind in my opinion. But, they should stop what they are doing and place their right hand over their heart. Every time I see the picture of Michelle Obama texting during the National Anthem it makes me mad. |
