Looking at getting a new truck (new to me not brand new). I've heard a lot of good things about Dodge curious to see what others suggest.

We like the Dodge with the Cummins diesel motor best ourselves...good fuel mileage and excellent hauling/towing abilities.  We have had a couple of Dodges with gas motors as well, and while they are good motors and pull well, we haven't been fortunate enough to get one that gets good gas mileage.

We just purchased a '12 Dodge 3500. Love my new to me truck! It pulls amazing, drives quiet and smooth. We wanted a manual transmission and it is the easiest standard I've ever driven.

First trip we went on, we were nearly involved in an accident, and it handled so great my husband was able to avoid a wreck and keep the horses from getting too shook up. We had contemplated going with a 2500, but after that truck stopped my babies with no problem, I'm glad I have it. We had been making due with our 1500 for short trips, and I know it wouldn't have stopped the trailer that fast.

I love me a new Dodge Diesel, but right now can't afford it so we are hanging on to our '99 Ford f350 super duty dually. It has 311k miles on it, and while it needs major work now thanks to my husband neglecting it for so many years, it is still going and is my daily driver as well as our tow vehicle. It also has the 7.3. I wouldn't take the new 6.0 if someone sold me a new one for $5000. I see so many of these with the hood up and the poor owner looking into the engine scratching their heads into them on the way up and down the mountain every day that I wouldn't risk it. And our "mountain" is only 4000 ft, so not something I'd take through the rockies.

Historical Note: Ford's 6.0-6.4-6.6 family of engines engineered and manufactured by International Harvester were produced from 03 1/2 model year through 09 model year. The previous family is the 7.3 Powerstroke also produced by International Harvester ran from 93 1/2 through 03 1/2. The vehicles with this particular is next to non existent on the used market, which indicates just how reliable they are. The current production in Ford is a Ford engineered and produced 6.7L 'Powerstroke' from 2010 to present. Their reputation precedes them currently................The original incarnation of Ford Diesel came out in 83/84 timeframe and were the not turbo 6.7L, then 6.9L, which while torquey had no 'pickup' whatsoever. Again, these types of trucks are virtually non existent in the current marketplace.

My long winded post is to present how Ford pioneered the diesel pick up market and illustrate just how difficult it is find a used Ford Diesel in the marketplace. This is informational only. And from an opinion Standpoint, worth exactly what One pays for it. However, history in this case does not lie, nor does the marketplace.

With a question like this, you will get the answers for all the major heavy duty brands, gas and diesel.

We've had a Ford Diesel and a Chevy Gas.  My parents currenlty have a Dodge Gas.  In the past they had Chevy Diesel and before that a  Chevy gas.   All the makes and models will have pros and cons.

Diesel cost more to buy and maintain, but they should last way longer than a gas and they have more torque for better towing plus they should get way better fuel mileage.
We personally traded our Diesel long bed in on a new gas short bed last year. We're not mechanics and can't do our own work and just because a diesel engine can take 100s of thousands of miles, the rest of the parts can't and we were getting nickle and dimed.  We were able to buy the Gas brand new for less than the used diesel's with 30-50K miles already on them.  and we got a warranty since we went new.  We're happy with our decision so far.  When it comes to buying trucks, there is no right or wrong.  You have to weigh the purchase price, maintanence prices and figure out how much daily driving it will be doing vs how much towing.  I don't tow enough right now to really justify needing the diesel and extra power.  Maybe one day I will, but right now, my truck is my daily driver to and from work and to run errands also and it does way more un-loaded miles than towing miles. I get comments every week in the parking lot about how big my 2500 Gas truck is.  I just tell them, if you think this one is big, you should have seen the truck I used to drive, that this one is a downsize
