My gelding has relapsed with EPM. We are treating him again. Does anyone have experience with EPM and preventing relapses?

My moms horse relapsed 3 times. She started him on the THE equine edge EPM formula and it helps them not relapse. He has now gone 9 months and working great and look fabulous!

You might consider doing a hair analysis. It will show where the weaknesses are. Its 50.00. I would get him on a good immune builder. When their immunity is low they will relapse.

What do you recommend for an immune supplement?

The paint in my avatar has had 7 rounds of medicine for EPM. The vet has determined blood titers that he is getting reinfected not relapsing. You need to get rid of anything that could possibly be infecting your horse. Put out live traps for opossums, get rid of barn cats. If you feel it is your hay, buy from someone else. If you think it is your feed, change. EPM is caused by a protozoa which basically is a type of parasite. The immune system does not fend off parasites. My horse has always had an extremely mild case of EPM and I have been very lucky.

I just want to remind everyone of the seriousness of EPM. One person on here had a horse diagnosed with EPM and he was dead in a week. This horse was at the track in Florida. I am sure that he was being fed anything necessary for immune support.

Once we got our horses right digestively, we haven't had to treat any of them ever again.  We haven't treated a horse in 18 months or so now and we were previously having to treat every six months.  You don't have to deal with relapses....

What was your method for getting them right?

Sorry!  I've been busy, lol

Last year when we were trying to figure out how to rehab my horses from contaminated feed we first went to Bluebonnet.  They recommended Transform DSI which is their digestive supplement for horses that have been through colic surgery, etc.  We saw great results and felt relief at the fact that we finally found something that would help our horses recover.  Once I was approached by Danco Forage about trying Omnis cubes we began the journey to removing processed commercial grain from their diet completely.  We loved how the horses looked and felt on Omnis only, but the ones that were affected the most by the bad feed were still tough to maintain.  In January this year I was approached about trying OE Align on them to see if it might contain something that they might be lacking...That's when we really saw them bloom.  We have all of our competition horess on OE Align now.  I love not having to worry about EPM relapses and treating for ulcers.  Our horses stay full and happy now that their gut is healthy.  Gut health is the key to maintaining a healthy immune system and it's absolutely mandatory in our area.  Our horses are on the most natural diet that I can find for horses put in unnatural circumstances like performance horses are.
