| Does everyone do this to every mare they're running or only if you suspect they're sucking air? Can you always hear them if they are sucking air? What other symptoms do they have if sucking air? I have a 6yo mare im
running that always seems to lift her tail or hold it out. I keep her on Progesterone shots once a week to keep her from cycle as she seems to come in heat or at least act like she's in more often than normal. Just wondering if sewing her up would help? Thanks for any input. ?? |

| My mare would make a slight noise when running and would also hold her tail out. I noticed she wouldn't stride out like I knew she could. We had a caslicks done and now her noise has stopped, hold her tail lower when running, and her times have really improved. She never did good in outdoor pens and now she is really running. I don't regret doing it at all! |

Location: At the race track with Ah Dee Ohs | Every mare that comes in our barn gets caslicks done. If they are suckling air they can get really sore. |

| A track vet once told me that if you did anything with a mare at a high rate of speed or if they are splitting the legs in a turn, you are stupid not to get a caslick's. He was shocked at how few barrel racers do it.

| I tend to ride mares and they get sewn up. ALL of them... It's cheap and can eliminate a lot of issues before they start and become habits.... |

Location: Tulsa, Ok | I am always astounded when this subject comes up at the number of people that do not keep caslicks in their mares. It is not an expensive or invasive procedure and a fairly cheap investment in their general and reproductive health and often times enhances performance. A no brainer!!! |

| I always thought it was just normal, common practice to have all running mares stitched. When I brought it up to one of my vets, she looked at me like I had 3 heads! I have a mare now that isn't stitched but when I start running her, she definitely will be getting it done. I can't see why you wouldn't? |

Location: "...way down south in the Everglades..." | I'm with Bingo and Murphy....I don't have my two mares sewed up. The one is in foal now so she'll likely end up with caslicks after foaling but the other mare doesn't seem to wind suck or have problems so I've never even considered doing it on her at this point. But now I'm curious and wondering if it could help her. I guess I've never considered it as a preventative unless there was an abnormality of the angle to where infection could become an issue....interesting topic. |

| I've never had a mare sewn up but now that I'm running all mares I'm becoming more observant to issues & learning more about this. A lot depends on the confirmation of the too-too area. The mare I had sewn up this week has a long vulva and when she poops, especially when I haul her and her poop
Is looser than normal a lot of it (poop) will hit or run down her vulva which can cause contamination if it gets inside. She also has been sore in her lower back which makes me wonder if from sucking air. My 4yo has a shorter vulva but at the bottom her lips open slightly, again causing possible contamination. It's not that expensive so I decided to do it as a preventative and see if it makes any difference in the way either run.

Location: You never know where I will show up...... | As a breeder, we do all of our own repro work here. Some of the worst uterine infections I've seen have been in maiden mares. All I run are mares, so for the sake of hopefully eliminating risk of contamination, I am doing what I can to increase the odds of a successful breeding career later on in that mare's life. Or in our case, we flush embryos from the mares we are currently running, so I like to keep them sewn up and keep them clean.

| How much of an opening is beneficial to a tail swisher. I have heard leave them open an inch. I guess most vets don't stitch them up enough. Opinions please. Thanks! |

Location: The best kept secret in TX | I've had my mare almost 10 years. Never sewn. I've never had a problem. I rope on her.

Location: Texas | Your vet can evaluate her and check for a functioning vestibulovaginal seal and you can also part the vulvar lips and listen for air sounds before you go in. Also, if they have air in their vagina you can see it on ultrasound.
We put a caslicks in my 3YO just prophylactically because I don't want to have to second guess in the future when she starts running. It's an easy and quick procedure. |
