That's sad. The previous owners should have put something in the sale that said the current lessees could keep their lease for their lifetime to keep them from losing homes they have lived in for 50 years.

It is sad that they are losing their homes, it's sad they have no back up plans. But why would someone invest their life savings and bank their retirement on a piece of land they don't own? I would never spend my hard earned money to build a home on leased property. Regardless of how "good" I believed the land owner to be. Things happen, sometimes beyond their control.

That's why it cost so much to buy something....
It's yours & you can do what you like with it.

The owner is not a jerk... He purchased it, it owns it, now he can do with it what he likes.
That's the Ametican dream of ownership... Isn't it?

That's why I go to work, so I can own my own land, horses & lifestyle.

I don't understand why these people don't have a 99 year lease. Very surprising. I would not think that any lender would have financed without land ownership or a long term lease.

I agree it is his land and he has the right to do what ever he wants, but he is a jerk. That is a fact. He doesn't care who he tramples in his path, he doesn't care who he screws over. This is not the first time and not the last time he will be a mega watt jerk.

Thing is he isn't screwing them over- they did it to themselves. He bought the land and he doesn't want to lease the land by the lake. He maybe a jerk, but this isn't being a jerk. The family is the one blame if there is any blame , but I don't believe there is.

Not meaning to sound without empathy, but I agree with most everyone else - this is simple math.  Lease = Lease, Own = Own.  The owner has the right to claim his land at anytime.  There is no "victim" here, the ranchers leased the land, they did not purchase it.  With a large ranch operation, you'd think they had a Plan B, since Plan A was a lease.

I know this is special circumstance due to the history of the ranch, but who builds a house on leased land?  How do you even get a loan to build a house on leased land?  I am sure there are lots of little things that those of us not involved don't understand.

It is very common to build on leased land. There are several lakes around here that have 99 year leases on their lots. Some of the homes are huge. They pay a monthly fee that pays the property taxes each year on the property.

The Waggoner ranch built the first line shack and then a few houses for their ranch hand families at the lake on a lease program.

As time wore on ranch hands died or went to other ranches and some of their family or friends, kinfolks or squatters appeared and roosted in the houses on the lake and even expanded by building other houses ............. the ranch ignored them since their main business is cattle, horses and oil.

I bet you a wooden nickel not a one of these squatters have anything written to validate a lease or that they even paid a lease ... The squatters have lived cheaply for 25-50 years and never saved a dime.

Listen to the comments above ....... this is how welfare started and has grown so huge in this country ... give give give and then the giver ... (not the ones yammering about being a jerk they are democrats spending someone else's money) ... finds there are more takers than ever with a line forming to the left ..

I will make you a deal ... I will sell you my 13 acres for full value and I will remain living in the house and pay you a lease for the cost of the taxes on the one acre the house sits on for 99 years ... which means I can lease it to my kinfolks with 10 kids and 13 junkyard dogs and 14 billy goats and decorate the yard with old worn out cars ... laughing ..
ANY TAKERS??

These are government corp of engineer leases inside the flood plain of the lake ... the ones on Lake Texoma from homes, restaurants and boat docks all
pray they are flooded because they have supplemented flood insurance from you the tax payer ... each time they get flooded they build back bigger than ever and ready to play the same game when they flood again ...

It is the same game people play when building in a flood plain of a creek ... there's a reason the old farmers house sits on that little hill ... but of course there was no tax payer flood insurance when he built and he was probably too proud to ask for a handout or play the dirty little game you see everywhere ...

I looked up the lakes on the Waggoner Ranch and they describe them as ANNUAL leases. These were for the Kemp lake and the Lake Diversion lakes. I don't know if these are the same ones as in the article, however, if they are the same ones as in the article, how stupid to put substantial amounts of money into any thing that is a year to year lease. You never know when the owner will die and the heirs do what the Waggoner heirs are doing sell out.

The Waggoner Ranch has been for sale for years and one of the dumbasses built a brand new home last year.

They claim the Waggoner ranch said they would make sure the leases stayed as they were when sold and of course that wasn't on any kind of documents. There is a Go Fund Me Page for the 25 families. One family has 2 homes...Can't make this stuff up..

I agree with the majority. If you lease or rent, don't expect to get anything for improving the land in any way. Buy your own land and knock yourself out making it your dream place.

I've never been on Diversion but have been on Kemp several times.

I've never seen anything other than weekend type cabins out there. They used to run that lake like a park. Gates open and close and what not.

Why is he a jerk?
Let's put it this way.
You see a horse for sale that you like.  Someone else is running it. You buy the horse, but you don't get to run the horse because the other person still wants to run it.... You take possession of the horse.  The Someone else is mad you took the horse to run yourself
