So I bought a Rocket for my mare, as Mrs. Charon suggested. Love it! But I'm having a problem with it sliding back. Especially coming out of the second barrel. Even after warm ups, I have to get off and slide it back on her shoulders. Charon said if it slides back then I need to go up a size. I don't mind buying another, but my mare is so narrow I don't think that an Ultra Rocket would come close to fitting her. Anyone else have issues like this at one point? I really don't want to spend that kind of money for a saddle that won't fit.....

I am new to the Caldwell scene as well. I bought a rocket used for 2800 for my 5 year old. Does fit beautifully and does not slip. Seat in it has a rise and i am a guy and it's a bit uncomfortable there. So I'm selling it and was trying to find another rocket or ultra with different seat. My good mare fits beautifully in a promax. My promax for 3500 bucks will be here Monday. Lol my third horse fits a maxed out. Info bought him one that would be over 10,000 in saddles in 2 months. Just for fun I got out my old 25 year old saddle that has fit ever horse it's been on. Guess what , i rode all three horses in it and no dry spots and fit awesome!!! So reality check for me lol the promax fits like 80-90 percent of horses so I'm keeping that one and selling the rocket. They are beautiful high highest quality saddles but there are other options just as good.

I have a promax and a maxxed out.... just ordered an xl maxxed out. I'm struggling with my promax fitting my horse as well. I'm trying to decide if it's too narrow. The maxxed out is a tad too wide... but I think with a 1" pad it might be ok.. I need to try it and see. I can't get my promax to stay on the shoulder. If I put it on the shoulder and feel under the concho it is tight. The thicker the pad I use the tighter it gets and the dry spots are smaller. Even with a 3/4" pad it is snug if I place it on his shoudlers. With that pad i get really big dry spots so I think that is the better fit??? I would put your saddle on with no pad and slide your hand UP under the concho and see if it snug. My experience is if they slide back and won't stay on the shoulder it is too narrow. What thickness of pad are you using?

I would like to know if anyone else gets the dry spots and if anyone really rides with them on the shoulder?

It could be too wide too. I have had saddles that I knew were too wide for my colts do the same thing.

When you feel under the saddle in the shoulder is it tight?

I had a Rocket do the same thing on one of mine, a Meleta Brown Freedom saddle fit him perfect and didn't slide back so the Rocket was actually too wide.  The good thing about the Caldwells is that if you buy them used, you won't lose money when you sell them.

I got an appendix that is is narrow in the wither area. I had a TG and it fit ok when i first got him with a thin pad. it looked to be a tad too narrow. though. He gained weight and so that was the tipping point. I had to ge the rocket and that has proved to be a perfect fit for him. maybe you could change pads? maybe wider in the front area or shim it?

It's not tight on her shoulder. It doesn't even really rest on her shoulders. There is empty space between her and the saddle when it's up far like it should be. Then when it slides back, it makes contact but it's not on her shoulders. I've tried it with a 1" 5 star and a 3/4" 5 star and it doesn't slide back as bad with the 1". Mrs Charon said to try an Ultra Rocket if it slides backwards and to try a smaller size if it rolls side to side. I'm just doubting she needs a 8.5" gullet. It rides my 3 yo perfect. Doesn't budge but she has a flatter back than this mare. They both have pretty high withers.

Idk if it's not down on her shoulders in the front because it's too narrow on her back or because it's too large. When it slides back it fits her fine so I don't think it's too big for her. Maybe I should try an Ultra. I just can't wrap my mind around this lanky mare wearing a 8.5" gullet.

When the saddle is on her shoulders is the saddle sitting level or is it up in the front?  If it sits up in the front then it's too narrow. Saddle should sit level.... Do you have any pictures?

Also, the Ultra Rocket is an 8" gullet, the xl ultra is a 8.5".

That's right! For some reason I had 8.5 in my head. Sits up a tad on the front. I do have pictures but they're too big to load

When that happened on one of mine, it was a too wide saddle. And rolling was a too narrow saddle, so total opposite of what she's saying.   I would try a thicker pad and see if that helps.

It sounds too wide

Possibly the wrong degree in bars, or the wrong rock.

You should feel even pressure under the entire saddle, if there is no contact by the shoulders it could be too wide or the tree is bridging on the back.

FLITASTIC - 2016-08-13 8:15 AM

I want to know what old saddle you dug out that fit a horse who would wear a maxxed out?
I am currently trying to find a saddle that won't roll on this 55 gallon drum of a mare that I own!

I won a saddle made by ETS ( East Texas Saddlery). They are still there in Greenville TX. Love their saddles and I have had 2 over the years. THey just fit a variety of horses!

I have a 15.25" Ultra Rocket I'll be selling if you anyone's interested..
I do have a question with the caldwell saddle placements though. When I put mine on the shoulders I get dry spots right behind the withers about the size of a softball. Just out of curiousity I put it behing the shoulders and had even sweat marks. So why do they preach to wear them on the shoulders I don't get it?

I ordered a Promax for my big gelding, and it's working out great. Tried it on his half sister, but it slid back extremely. Borrowed a friend's Rocket for her and it was perfect. So I would agree that sometimes sliding back means too wide.
I've only been riding Caldwell saddles for two years now, and would like to say they make riding enjoyable again. I can actually ride pain free. As far as comfort for the rider goes, be very careful about the rise you choose for the seat. A 14" medium rise may feel great, but a 14" high rise might crush you.
The Promax and the Rocket both seem to fit a variety of horses and hold their value really well.

I can not get away from the dry spots either... makes me crazy. They are about the size of a softball as well...  Charon says to put the saddle on the hump of the shoulder.. mine never stay in place and I get the big dry spots. So i started placing mine right behind the hump of the shoulder trying to make sure my concho is lined up with his elbow... Draw a line straight down from the concho and it should be in line with his elbow... hope that makes sense.  I'm glad to hear I'm not the only one having problems with the dry spots.

My maxxed out slips back too. I have just given up and place it where I did all my other saddles behind the shoulder and it stays and I get even sweat patterns. Not sure I could ever go back to another brand of saddle though! I use the cutback pad that Charon sells and I do like the shape of it on his back.
