I have looked into multiple supplements....to the point it is overwhelming. Oxy-gen, Finish Line total plus, Simply Equine, etc

Are supplements necessary..

Do the really work or is it money wasted.

Feeds can be just as overwhelming.

Someone once posted to keep is simple...

It seems supplements and feed programs get complicated real quick let alone expensive.

What supplements have you had success with?

I find it all very overwhelming too. My horses are on grass or grass hay yr round with grain once a day and a joint supplement. They are fat and healthy. My joint supplement is on the cheaper side cause I can't afford much more right now, but I have noticed a difference in my mare. She's more happy to work and excited about running.

If my horses didn't have issues like arthritis and copd they would be on less supplements or maybe none. The supplements I use are more than worth it as they keep my horses feeling good even with their conditions. Just go with what your horse needs. If they are doing good without..don't change a thing.

I use THE supplements as needed and I feed FORCO everyday to keep the gut healthy. Our dogs get FORCO everyday also.

I also give some form of salt to keep him drinking year round. I rotate those.

Depends on the horse. I have horses on no supplements and then I have others on several. All depends on their individual needs. I can guarantee my mare with respiratory issues couldn't run without supplements. But I also have a gelding who is best left with zero supplements, just good hay and mineral access.

Β Depends if you have an issue and if you get the correct and effective supplement. Some supplements are proven with studies do work but Β only a few out there actually back by peer reviewed scientific studies. Β You also have to be careful what form is the supplement in, is a small enough molecule that can be absorbed by the horse or does it pass right through, are there any vitamins/minerals necessary for absorption to take place etc. Β Β

I say injectable joint supplements monthly for a performance horse along with high quality forage (grass/hay) and nothing else unless you have a specific issue.

Do I think supplements are necessary? Yes. I don't think most feeds, even complete feeds, cover all the bases. And the grass where I live is on very hard ground that does not perculate. We have to have aerobic septic systems here because the ground is hard as a rock. I give everything Mineral 201 and Foundation Detox from Animal Element and the barrel horses get other things depending on their needs.

I do think supplements help. A simple thing to look at is their coat color. Mine are shiny and soft. After putting my horse on a good hoof supplement there was significant improvement in the quality of her feet. I do feed through and injectable joint, I feel my horse moves better. I didn't feel like the injections once a month was strong enough. I think supplements help fill in the nutritional gaps the horse may have. I love THE and has seen a large improvement in all of my horses and are very happy with them and their prices.

I used that before I was convinced to try THE Muscle Mass. Made my horse's coats worse than they were. They had a sun burned kind of look. Went to THE and have never looked back. I can email you pictures of my horse's on it. They actually have a very simple /cheap diet and look like a million bucks. Grass hay & soaked alfalfa/beet pellets with a scoop of THE. It won't break the bank either. 80 scoops is $65 and you can add up to 4 special blends for $5...ulcer prevent, hoof, hair & coat, moody mare, joint & arthritis, calming etc

Yes and I think there are a lot of name brand supplements that are just way over priced. Smartpak, oxygen, etc when I buy supplements I keep it within reason. Over $1 per day is just outrageous. I quit feeding vitamins/minerals a couple years ago. I try to feed no more than 2 supplements per horse and one of those is for joints.

What I am currently using and like...
Animed msn
The performance w/cough
Select the best hoof supplement (not sure about this yet)

Actiflex is my #1 choice. It works and it's affordable. If I had to cut everything else out this is what I'd still spend my money on.

Outlaw Nutra is blowing up....are they really that good? Or just a fad? I think it's too pricey personally!

I think they do help. But I like an all in one supplement so you don't have to buy 6 different things. And Im cheap too! I use Animal Element. I did so only after several people I knew told me how much it helped their horses. I didn't have any specific problems when I started, I just wanted a prevention program and something to fill in the gaps where feed lacks and a fuller topline on a couple horses. So far I am very happy.
