| A friend of mine has a 14 year old gelding that in the past couple of days has been refusing to work the pattern. He has never done this. Her husband videoed her yesterday while working him. When she watched the video she seen him squirting urine on the pattern. She asked her husband to watch the video to make sure she wasn't seeing things and he seen it to. Any info would help! She called her vet and made an appointment. Vet said that is a sign of severe pain. Thank you in advance for any help! |

| Get a urinanalysis done and a culture, ask for a in and out catheter, it is more reliable then a catch.
Could be a bladder infection, or kidney stones |

| Yes get his urine checked. My mare was doing this and she had calcium build up to point of kidney stones, so painful they can't relieve their bladder all the way so it is forced out when running. My vet did a cathered with dog medicine to break down the calcium . I give her bucca leaves in her feed at night to flush out her bladder. She is getting better, I also give 3cc lasix two hrs before I run so she will flush out. |

Oh man I was afraid it might be his kidneys. He is eating goof and drinking and looks awesome but he does not want to work the pattern. |

Can you tell me more on this? The medicine they flushed with? My mare has kidney stones, had a massive bladder stone we had removed almost 2 years ago. A month ago she passed some horrrible looking stuff when she urinated, took her in and she had a bladder infection, no stones when we ultra sounded, blood work came back good for everything including Creatine and Bunn. Also, Bucca leaves, where did you pick those up at? Thank you in advance.
Oh, just caught Lasix, how does that flush her out? Dont' you have to withhold water when you give Lasix?

What happens if it is stones?
Bladder stones they can remove via Lithrotripsy or going in thru the abdomen. We had the lithrotripsy done on CC. Kidney's they don't know a lot about. I followed an herbal regimen for my mare as she had both the bladder stones and kidney stones and the vets weren't wanting to do the bladder stone surgery seeing as they felt they were merely a symptom of the bigger issue which was the kidneys .

Could it be from pain somewhere else? He reared up with her and she swatted him once with her over and under and her husband said he squirted urine when she swatted him. I am surprised she swatted him.....she babies him. |

vet told her no working or riding him until he sees him. She is so worried and upset. He is the "same run everytime" horse and he has never acted like this. |

And this is why vets should stick with what they know instead of arm chairing a diagnosis. |

Location: Florida | I had a problem with this but it was an EPM survivor. He lived 12 years after treatment but the bladder damage was what made us put him down. I hope your vet can find something simple like beans. |

Oh man I hope this isn't the case. I have a gelding that had EPM and he never came back 100 percent but never had this problem. EPM is horrible. I feel bad for her because she truly loves her horses and gives them the best care. This just came out of nowhere! |

My gelding that got it was a nice barrel horse ...own son of Rare Bar and an own grandson of beduino on his dams side. It just broke my heart when he never fully recovered from it. He spent 6 days at oakridge....he is still with me and will be till he dies. He loves the grandkids. |
