What product do you use to wash your dog?
My dog has all of a sudden gotten really dry, itchy skin.
She's on Blue Buffalo's Senior Blend so I wouldn't think it was because of poor nutrition. Maybe I am wrong?

Thanks guys.

I tried a BOATLOAD of expensive dog shampoos for my itchy dog...guess what works the best? The original blue Dawn dish soap. No lie. I try to bathe her once a week or every other. I am not saying she never itched again...but it cut it way back.

How strange! I used Dawn on her the first bath I gave her because she had fleas from the shelter.

May have to try that when I get home to give her some relief.

I'm a dog groomer and I agree dawn is a good soap that most people have around. We use it at my salon for greasy dogs or if they are really dirty. It gets dogs clean like no other shampoo but not sure if it is best for itching. Otherwise any basic oatmeal shampoo or a hypo allergenic shampoo also works(and you can use the hypo ones on the face too). We use tropiaclean brand at my salon but there are tons of brands out there. Basically as non-irratating of a shampoo as you can get. I have two French Bulldogs who both have allergies and I use Bayer brand shampoo(I got it at petsmart), there is one formulated for itchy sking and it really works to stop their itching. Also maybe try some benedry/zrytec (check with your vet on dosage as it varies by weight) for a few days. There might be something in the air bothering her and the allergy pill will keep her comfy.

Glad to help! I hope you can find something to help! Allergies of all sorts have been terrible this year. I feel like 3-4 times a day I hear from clients who say their dogs are itching like crazy and they never have had the problem before.

When I had Getter I used Dr Bronners castile soap. The " I know I won't spell it right" eucaliptas repels fleas. Dr Bronners soaps are all natural. You can get their soaps at any health food store.

Dog groomer also.. I second the oartmeal or hypo allergenic shampoo for that type skin problem. Might have your vet do skin scrape to check for bacteria or other problems if he hadnt had problems before. Dawn is good for oily problems but is too harsh for very dry skin unless you follow up with a moisturizer or hot oil treatment.

Our dogs didn't do well on Blue Buffalo at all. I know there are many different varieties so one might be good while another they might have a lot of problems. Can't remember which one we feed but we also didn't have good luck with Taste of the Wild.

It sure wouldn't hurt to change food and see if that helps your problem. JMHO

Try a grain free food. I feed Nulo senior grain free to my Labs and they do great. No more itching which I had before with other foods

I agree with grain free - there are many grain free products now..

Personally "Grain free with fish oils" is what I recommend the OP try.

Retired Vet tech/groomer (still groom my own) so I think inside the pet first...

I'd consider a visit to the vet for a skin scraping and/or thyroid test.

One of our dogs was losing hair, getting dry scaley skin etc. tried the hypo allergenic shampoos etc.

Turns out he has low thyroid. He gets a pill once a day and he's once again an illustrious bear of a dog.

In addition to grain free food my dogs get 1 fish oil capsule (1000mg)
and 1 Osteobiflex triple strength capsule in the morning with their food. They look amazing! They are two Labs. One is almost 15 yrs old and they other is 9. These supplements are inexpensive and amazing for dogs!

I use Murphy's Oil Soap on Luca. It's instant death on fleas, and his coat is so soft and shiny and smells "clean" when we're done. (I say we because I get just as washed as he does!)

I use Animal Pharmaceuticals Max Chlorahexidine shampoo. It's $15-$25 but it lasts me a long time and really helps my dog with his itching and he's a huge itcher. I also have him on Canidae Pure Grain Free dog food and it's a little pricey but since he's so little it lasts me awhile! I don't know how big or little your dog is, but if I notice mine is having a really itchy spell (sometimes it's just out of nervousness), I put a light tshirt on him (since he's mostly an inside dog and we're in the AC) so he can't scratch because his back gets the worst. Just a suggestion that may help!

I would add some fish oil to your dogs diet, that is what the vets recommended for my dog and it worked. I started out with a teaspoon, then moved up to a few tablespoons.

You need to treat the dry skin from the inside
