There is no going rate to lease a horse. It's an individual agreement between the horse owner and the leasee.

I think during the conditioning phase I wouldn't pay anything. when the horse was fit enough to race then start paying lease payments. that way if the mare had an underlying condition you are not out lease money to condition and find out she is not suitable to perform.

Thank you!!! Yes i think that we had discussed paying once she is once again performance ready. i just want to agree on a number before we are all invested in her then cant afford or agree to an amount:)

All I can say is if the horse is very well bred and a true 1D horse, get everything in writing and I wouldn't hesitate to have a lawyer look at it.

I leased a lot when I was a teen, some paid, some free, and in all I was very lucky with regards to not having injuries or any other issues. Thinking back on it all we probably should have been a little more proactive about discussing ahead of time what happens in the event of injury, especially loss of use. I get the carry insurance aspect, but in the event they won't pay out who is responsible for covering the value of the horse? What happens if the horse develops a training issue while in your possession, let's say starts to duck or run up the wall, who is responsible.

Tough questions but better to ask ahead of time and put stuff in writing before parties are upset and emotional.

All of above post plus what happens with any winnings, who's responsible for day-to-day maintenance (Farrier, etc), length of lease, etc.
