Β  I need some recommendations for wide horses with substantial withers, big shoulders, and flat backs. My horse has developed a TON of topline muscle and now his back is quite flat. He still has substantial withers and big wide shoulders. Most saddles are way too curved for him now. I had meleta's #2 tree, which was flat enough but not quite wide enough. I had an 8" gullet crown c that he has outgrown width wise and also is just a little too curved. I also tried a dressage saddle and an older Tex Tan, both of which were too curved.Any suggestions?

Β  Yeah unfortunately as I need a new saddle I also have my wedding to pay for, so I was hoping to find something used.

Try a CJ by Cactus. It fit my tank of a mare like a glove but I couldn't ride in it to save my life. So I now have an older Coats and it is fantastic.

Truth!  Nothing made after roughly 2004.  Those old Coats saddles are amazing!

My mare has a wide flat back and the Cactus CJ didn't work.  It fit her at the withers but the back didn't open up enough. I'm using a Lisa right now and she likes it better.

1. *She's gorgeous.
2. If I'm looking at used coats, are there different trees to look for? Like wide vs standard or whatever?

Right? Like my Crown C was perfect...for a little while. Then he got wider and flatter which is great, because his back feels better than ever, but now EVERY FREAKING SADDLE just pops right up in the back like a rocking chair.

 Following!
I'm having a similar issue. Flat backed but mutton withered narrow shoulders.  My Cactus Marlene McRae flex tree is making her back sore and rolling bad.
(Using a mutton withered pad from 5 star....it helps a littleGoing to look into Coats or Slone B3!

Huh yeah that's kinda the opposite of my guy (except the flat back part). And yet my Mcrae didn't fit mine either!

I'll post pictures of my Coats on my mutton withered horse tonight.  Mine is a ranch cutter, not a barrel saddle, and has a 6 1/4" gullet, per Coats themselves when I bought it, but then it spreads quickly down through the bars and sits nice and flat even on a horse that is made like a 55 gallon drum.  Don't always buy into the wide gullet phenomenon....there is alot more that goes into proper fit than the width of the gullet.

Thank you- she's the Queen B lol

I would get the serial number and call on them to get the specs. I can't remember what my is exactly but I can get the serial tonight and you can sure give them a call! It's flared more than a normal saddle but the specs are pretty 'standard' I believe?

My mare was fit into a 8 1/2 Crown C until she grew bigger, I went that route and she stopped dead in her tracks between 1 and 2, ripped my saddle off and it burned her hair! I even sent it off to get re-treed because it scared me. I sold it and ran in the 1D the next weekend with my old saddle.

So I read the description on Tamy Semas' website and it says " Our Saddle is built on low bar angles to sit down on the horses back and make contact from the front of the bar to the back. There’s flare in the bar but no rock to the bar. It’s design will help open up the horses shoulder and allow the muscle to roll up underneath the bar. In addition, this bar pattern allows the horses back and loin to move freely. It’s designed to make contact without causing pressure points. We have two fits regular and wide. The regular tree fits most horses, our wide tree fits horses that are broader throughout their shoulders and backs."

Their wide is only a 6.75" gullet but I tried an older hereford on my guy the other day that had a 6.5" gullet and was wide enough. Any input on her saddles?
