I bought a beautiful Buckskin Appaloosa from a Kill pen in Oklahoma... he is branded and registered... came from a Ranch in South Dakota owned by Tommy and Kathy Harty... He along with at least 3 other registered appaloosas that I know of were ALL in the kill pen... does anyone know about this Ranch or has dealt with them?

It's pretty awful, this horse is FIVE years old and scared to death of people, I'm quite certain had never had a halter on him or had any handling, even touching him he freaked, I've made a lot of progress with him in the past 2 months but breaking him out completely is going to be quite the feat.... Just looking for info on why a breeder would not handle horses they breed... I saw online they have sold quite a few in auctions and said they breed "quality Quarter horse influenced Appaloosas....

There is a lot of big open country in the Dakota's to run livestock on. Most of them don't see people untill they are rounded up.

Can you post the website your referring to. I "might" know who you are talking about and would like to show a friend of mine who might have more information.

When buying from a kill pen, you have to realize that they most likely have issues. You have to be willing to deal with it and fix it. Your horse may have been broke and then turned out . Then circumstances may have kept them from bringing him back up. Did he sell directly from that ranch? He may have gone through a lot of traders before selling

this is all I've found on doing a search... looks like an older couple maybe... I saw an ad that said a horse was for sale due to health issues... it has their email and phone # listed so I may try to email.. I'm so frustrated that nothing has been done to him but sounds like that's the "way" of things in the more remote areas sometimes...

I was at that sale but I just don't remember the appaloosas.  Nor have I ever heard of them. That is just sad though.

Holy cow!!!! she is a VET and let's her "amazing horses" go to slaughter!! there were TONS of young branded, registered ones there!! This just disgusts me!! I'm going to write them an email, doubt I'll hear back. What business do they have breeding horses and claiming them to be such great horses when you can't even touch or halter them.... wow!

Thanks for posting this!

They may have sold the horses to a trainer and then the horses ended up at slaughter. I wouldn't judge them before knowing the whole story and I for sure wouldn't come at them with that attitude. I for one, wouldn't respond to a hateful email either. Especially if I knew the sender wouldn't listen to both sides of the story.

I agree with IRunonFaith, you dont know them and what could have taken place, someone else could have bought these horses. Not right to be Judgeing befor you know the whole story.

I am definitely one who tries not to judge and to be fair but the fact is, this is happening SO OFTEN. I see 4-5 horses from the same ranch week after week in the slaughter pen. Different ranches but commonly people breeding, not touching and then kicking them to the kill pen. The irresponsible breeder who puts their initials in names or brands them and then sells to slaughter? dumb.

I do understand that "life happens." But I do not think this is the case in most circumstances. Yes, health issues, job loss, whatever may be a contributor but it happens all too often for this to always be the case. And when I see 10s/20s ran loose through a sale ring, they clearly were breeding too many and should have been more responsible.

I don't like it but am enough of a realist to know that horses are livestock. I am aware of someone that used to raised draft horses and ship them clear across the country to be loaded on boats for Japan where they were then slaughtered for meat. He has passed away so is not doing so anymore. I might not have liked it but it was his legal right to do so.

DO I wish that people would be more responsible in breeding their horses (and dogs and cats). For sure! But I don't want Big Bother, or my neighbor, for that matter, to be telling me that I cannot breed my good mare.

So what it the alternative? And what do we do with all the unwanted horses out there? I REALLY hate all the CL adds I see with people trying to sell their twofeetinthegrave old faithful that they don't want to feed anymore, or the cripple THEY can no longer use, but I cannot prevent them from doing so. Most of those horses go on a truck to Mexico too, after have given a lifetime of service. I really hate THAT.

I would think maybe a phone call to get more information about your horse would be nice. I doubt a scathing email would entice anyone to respond.

I emailed them but did so in a tactful way, just asked for more information and asked if they were aware that several of their young horses ended up in the slaughter pen and also asked if they could tell me where he came from (if he had been handled at all or if he was out on open Country). Would be nice to know... I'll see if I hear back. I was told that they were sold directly FROM them to the kill pen so I don't think so... from what I read they had to downsize due to drought or something...

I agree, responsible breeders would go a long way... unfortunately with unlimited freedom.. not the case... I know so many that breed crappy horses then put a post up a few months later BEGGING someone to buy their horses that a few months ago they were so excited to breed.

AGREED! I do too.... I can see if this happened and they STOPPED breeding realizing there horses were not selling and that it was not responsible but it appears they are still breeding... I'm trying to find out... the lady is a vet so you'd think she'd care about the horses more than that... who knows.

So if it is true they downsized due to drought- what were they supposed to do? Let them die of thirst and starvation? Not that long ago horses weren't broke until they were 4 or 5, so if they are old school rancher/breeders this would make sense. We recently went through a severe drought and I could no longer afford to feed my old cripple so I had to put him down. It cost me $300.00. Very few people could afford to put a large number of horses down, hence part of the need for killer pens.
Besides what is worse - being broke at two sold to the wrong home and suffering for years or running free and living a horse's dream until they are 5, then due to drought having to go to the killers? Both horses will suffer but one will suffer for a much smaller time. Neither scenario is good I agree. It is admirable that you saved one but get off your high horse and concentrate on him.
