Alright so as the title says, my horse is acting weird.
Yesterday he was laying down in his stall. No big deal until I went into the stall & he just stayed there. He didn't bother to get up & this is a fairly sensitive/jumpy 4yo colt.

I made him get up which really didn't take much effort. He had some of his alfalfa left over from the half flake I threw for "lunch". He had eaten his "breakfast" alfalfa flake just fine.

I took him out of his stall fearing colic but he's just not showing any colic signs. It's like he's sedated. I made him walk on the lunge line. He was extremely lazy-hardly could make out a whinny to his buddies (which is the usual colt/stallion screech).

Since he didn't seem anything other than lazy-I put him away for the night & didn't feed again.

Tonight again-doesn't seem to really be interested in his hay-hea munching on it fine but just seems like out of it. He stood by his water staring at me (water was filled night before but seems to have drank some).

What am I dealing with? Anything? Sorry for the super long post-just wanted as many details as I could think now.

Its never ever wrong to call a vet out! I would call a vet ASAP, just never know, especially when they act drastically different.

I also just realized-there is a new plant outside his stall-I guess it it a Fig Tree. But on the list for toxic for horses, fig is on the Toxic AND Non-Toxic list. I don't know what specific kind it is. It's fairly small-still in shrub like stage but I just realized the piece of what I thought was alfalfa yesterday actually looks like this plant!

Take a piece of the tree to the vet, also have him palpated, I had one act the same way, took her to the vet, he agreed something was off, blood work normal. I left her there and 2 days later she had a massive gi bleed

 Yikes!! That sounds super scary!!

well what's weird is I gave him a new bucket of water (sometimes he's a freak & needs it to be 100% spot less). He seemed to be into the new water playing & drinking. What the heck!

I couldn't find the darn thermometer. Vet didn't think it sounded like an emergency enough to come tonight.

& no grain.

The plant ended up not being a fig tree. I guess it's a flowering type tree. My fiancé couldn't think of the name (and of course I have no clue). I still have the piece that was chewed on so I don't know if he actually ate that.

I got new afalda bales on Monday, but from the same feed store as usual.

You need to take his temp. If you dont have a horse thermometer, then go get one and take his temp.

Hows your horse doing today? And what did the vet say about this?

So basically he's eating and drinking okay? Last year one of my horses was acting what I described as lethargic. Laying down more than usual, didn't want to come out of his stall (but he always loved his stall), walking slowly. At the same time, he was going through an eye infection. I thought it might be related. I suspected something systemic like leptospirosis. Negative for that. Vet wasn't very concerned about the lethargy and I was thinking I was imagining things and being a worry wart. We had a lot going on with the eye (I was out there treating it 7 days a day in the middle of winter!), he almost lost it and he's older so I kind of forgot about him not being as active as normal. Saved the eye! Then cut to this summer and he's lame. Blocked and X-rayed, we find out that at some point, he had a mild founder. Vet not sure when. Could have been a few weeks prior, or a few years, or last winter when I thought he was lethargic! Maybe his feet were hurting and he was laying down more than usual and walking slowing because of the founder? So I'm wondering if your guy's feet hurt? I don't usually feed alfalfa but could alfalfa cause them to founder?

So I took his temp... 100.7. The vet had me lift his tail & grab his tongue to see if he responded right away, which he did. The vet had me give him a gram of bute since I didn't have banamine. I kept in close touch with the vet as she didn't think it sounded like an emergency. I fed him probably only a 1/4 of the flake the next evening. (per vet instructions)

The vet is suspecting ulcers since he was grinding his teeth. He still never showed any colic symptoms and is back to normal now. Ulcerguard has been ordered & on the way, but he hasn't received any meds yet.

Hhmmmm. This is a good point. He did have a giant rock lodged near his frog about 3 or so weeks ago. He was a little off on that hoof for about a week. He has always been fed alfalfa. Sometimes grain which I try to keep simple (oats, flax, rice bran). I don't expect founder but you never know!

Thank you! He definitely seems to be enjoying the extra attention! He's been extra cuddly. Which helps since my dog actually passed the same day he started acting funny.

God bless your heart, you've had it tough. Praying extra hard for him and for your grieving. . . . Was it the dog in your avatar?

Thank you, I appreciate it! & yes it was the dog in my Avatar.

Of course my silly brain liked to imagine that I had some kind of magical bond with my horse & he was just sad because I was. Ha wishful thinking I guess?
