What do you guys feed your crazies? I board my horses so I don't really have a say in hay quality but it's crap lol No access to grass in the winter. In the summer they are on grass 24/7 but still get the grain and hay. They are currently on Southern States Select plus ( they change feed every once in a while). My older mare does well on pretty much anything. My 9 year old is high strung and seems to drop weight easily (she's new to me). Both are being worked - older mare less (2x per week) - my 9 year old will be starting a training schedule so about (4x per week). Both are UTD with floats so teeth aren't an issue.

What are my options? I prefer something I can buy at a feed store already bagged but if anyone has an awesome DIY recipe that they would like to share I would appreciate it!

A higher protein/fat lower carb/sugar feed would work well for both.  Renew Gold would be my option.

Isn't it a little early to be drinking?  Or is this leftover from last night?

protein has little to do with excitability. Sugars are the culprit

renew gold and alfalfa I would stick to the hay not a compressed version with an inflated price unless you can't get it any other way.

renew gold- or rice bran pellets and alfalfa pellets - really makes them look great put good weight not belly weight - if you do either of these feeds I really recommend you do alfalfa pellets to because the phosphorus/calcium ratio will be off and that is not good for anything especially bones

Renew Gold is Ca balanced, as are some of the other rice bran products.  It tells you on the bag. My stabilized rice bran isn't, so I feed it with alfalfa to help balance.

While there are advantages in feeding some alfalfa in any grass hay diet. There is little need for concern over the overall Cal/phos ratio if the concentrate portion of the diet is Stabilized Rice Bran. We Calcium balance Renew Gold, but, that should not be the deciding factor in using our product. Where the Cal/Phos ratio does become an issue is when larger feed rates of grain based concentrates are fed. That truly does affect the overall ratio. Since most SRB or Renew Gold diets do not include those high grain rations, and are fed at very low comparative rates, the effect of both the Cal and Phos in that portion of the diet is really insignificant in a 20 pound total ration. In addition, unlike most popular assumptions, current analysis of most grass hays grown today show a calcium level that is actually higher that phosphorus. There are some regions of the country where the ratios are close, and in those areas there are benefits to adding some alfalfa to the diet to increase hind gut efficiency and address any calcium issues. The small amount of calcium that would be contributed by balancing a pound or so of SRB will effect the overall ratio of the diet less that the size of the flake of hay you happen to grab when you feed.

So.... I cannot get Renew Gold by me. I'm on the east coast and it says that Tractor Supply carries it but NONE of them near me have it. I also cannot find Rice Bran. Only Oats, Beet pulp, and Wheat Bran.... HELPPPPPP!

There isn't any substitution for good hay but you might want to add some alfalfa pellets or cubes...I cannot believe you can't find rice bran? Crazy...I would look for a Total Equine dealer.

I had a university vet look at my Renew Gold. He said it's basically a fat supplement that requires vitamins/minerals. He said is by no means a complete feed. What are y'all thoughts?
