Location: Somewhere around here | I'm not the type of person to sick my nose where it didn't belong but I'm a little concerned. There's a property I pass every time I go into town and they have a couple of acres for their lawn and they keep a nice horse in that area. Now this is what concerns me; the owners of the property also keep a tent set up, a hammock, random items, and a few old wooden boxes strewn around the same area where the horse is. To me this is all a safety hazard but from my knowledge the horse has never hurt itself, but I feel like it might just be a matter of time. Should I say something to the owners or write a letter, or should I just leave it be? |

Location: Pacific Northwest | I would leave it. Our property floods so we have limited room of what never goes under water, which means sometimes tractors and 3pt equipment are parked in the one horse field. I've had 4 different horses live in that field and even when running around not a single one has ever been hurt. On the other hand I had a horse in a different field, with just grass, not even trees, and somehow he completely split his leg open.

Our horses are turned out in our second pasture for a few hours each week to graze it down. Our yard doesn't have a fence so they graze up around the house, around toys, dogs, lawn furniture, etc. If my neighbor told me something like that I'd laugh and go about my business. But we're used to having non country people call our number on our gate for "emergencies" and tell us that our horses are laying down, or that we were cruel to put blindfolds on them (Flymasks). That was a fun voicemail. I even saved it  |

Yep, totally not your problem. Unless the horse is in legitimate danger, it's really none of your business. They already know there's stuff out there where the horse is, not sure what writing a letter would accomplish.

We posted the number on our gate because our gate is on a curve and people take our fence out a lot because they miss the curve. So we posted the number so we could come get animals and fix the fence when it happens. Or in case my black dog decides to dig and crawl under the fence, people can call me to come get her.
But OMG when I got that voicemail.... I laughed so hard I cried. They said: "I'm just a concerned citizen. I will be contacting the Sheriff. You shouldn't be allowed to own animals. You're a sorry excuse for a human for blindfolding those poor animals. How dare you, Etc..." I can only imagine what the Sheriff said... We know him personally. LOL |
