Location: Oklahoma | I have been having an argument with my SO, and although I see it both ways I stand by my opinion.
What is your opinion on entering your good, rodeo horse at a weekly Jackpot?
Me- I think it is ok to keep your horse in running shape
SO- Stupid to run the good horse for $150 check |

If your SO owns the horse, then you're dancing to his tune on entries.
If you both own the horse, then it's bigger jackpots with good payouts and rodeos.
Also, off topic, SOs, unless truly invested with years and years, really shouldn't get much say over what you do with your animals. Takes a ring for that, and only if they're paying. |

Location: Arkansas | It depends, lol. If the horse is young and healthy, and you aren't hauling hard, then I think it's fine. If the horse is older, has health issues (bleeding, etc), or if you are going Fri/Sat or Thur/Fri/Sat, then I wouldn't waste said horse on a $150 jackpot. |

Location: Oklahoma | He had 4 weeks off after the last rodeo of the season. Finals started 2nd week of October, and AQHA world is the last one the 3rd week of November. Series is early in the week, and I have a different finals every other weekend. Fortunately he is better the more runs you put on him and is used to running 4-5 times a week. He has only been running barrels 2 years and is 12 this year.
SO ropes on him too, he has never been "babied" always had to work for a living. He has had it good, the last year since his main job has been a barrel horse. |

We have been together almost 6 years, and don't tell each other where to enter. He just expresses his opinion when he thinks I am wrong. |

| I believe the barrel GODS give good horses an X number of runs in their lifetime - I don't want to waste mine in the practice pen or small jackpots. Sorry would have to side with the SO on this one |

Location: Alberta, Canada | My good horse runs at small jackpots in the spring to get our timing back. Once we start hauling to rodeos and bigger runs, she stays home if I haul colts to smaller runs. Alot of girls in my area think I'm stuck up for not cracking her out everywhere but she's a bleeder and has alot of health issues. I can't justify a $150 win to risk her.
That being said, every horse is different :) |

If small jackpots are your thing and you will have a good time entering then go for it.

| There was a woman who made the NFR several years on the same horse. She would show up at little jackpots and run him. I never could figure out why. One day I asked a friend of hers why and she said the horse ran better the more you used him. Did it shorten their career? Probably, but she sure took good care of him when he couldn't run anymore. Do what you think is best for you and your horse.

Location: In The Snow, AZ | I run as much as I can. Granted, we don't have local races very often. So "as much as I can" is two to four total runs a month. The two local series we had this year were on not so ideal ground. I made one run between the two series and decided not to risk my horse again. Several other horses were lamed, and one had to be euthanized .
I do this for fun. My mare is an awesome horse and is well cared for. She will not take me to the NFR, nor is that a goal of mine. But so long as she is sound and willing, we will run wherever we will enjoy our time. |

| There's horses who can sit for a week and still crack out a winning run.
There's horses who need to be kept on point with consistent work and runs.
You know which one yours is.
I think they only have so many in them BUT - if he's the second type of horse, then that's a risk you take. Shorter career with more earnings or a longer mediocre career because you didn't keep him sharp. |

| I was given an older mare a couple of years ago.
She is pretty gritty but wasn't run much in her career. It took me a few months to really get with her. I did NOT jackpot her last year and it took me most of the rodeo season to get MY timing back with her (I am old too, lol). So I will be looking for places to run her at through the winter so that hopefully I won't waste the rodeo season hitting barrels and losing money, which is wasting this mare MORE, IMHO. |

| They only have so many runs in them. If you have a horse that can win at the rodeos or really big races, I wouldn't waste runs there. Also, if you are running frequently at races on the weekends, you wouldn't need a weeknight jackpot for a tune up. Maybe only if you haven't run for a while would I consider running a high caliber horse at a small jackpot for a warm up or tune up. |

| I have found that my rodeo horse doesn't run as hard at smaller jackpots. I just end up being a little disappointed when she doesn't clock like I know she can. So I have been trying to only run her at rodeos and bigger jackpots... She is fun to run though so sometimes it's hard to leave her behind. I have a younger horse I will run at the smaller jackpots instead. |

I agree with SO. You only get so many runs; save them for when they need to count. |
