I believe it was a specific mill in a specific area of it was even proven that it was the feed and that they ruled out everything else including hay.

I would not feed Nutrena period.. Too many other good feed brands out there to choose from.
My 2 year old gelding that I had but traded off for another gelding died from this feed Safe Choice and it was proven..

This happen about 10 years ago, so all this bad feed and horses dieing is nothing new with Nutrena feed company, and alot of this feed is milled here in town.I just would not take a chance with it.

Dan coliced very bad about 3 years ago and we had just tried the Nutrena SR. I swore that was the problem and threw it away and said never again. This is a horse that could eat briars and air and stay fat and dappled and healthy at that point. . .

A message I sent on FB when asked if I had toured the local Cargill/Nutrena plant because they had been told there was no Monesin there:

They use Monesin on the bulk feed. So while it isn't where they bag out, to say they use no Monesin in the plant isn't exactly the truth. They make medicated chicken feed there too. Regular chicken feed is what they use for their clean out. When they make horse feed, the computer system does a complete system shut down if medication is accidentally put in. That's according to one of the top 3 guys there. Guess a person can choose how they want to read between the lines with that info.

The risk of contamination is reason enough but Nutrena is not a fixed formula feed meaning they can change ingredients according to the avalibilty of ingredients-it does not have to match the tag on the bag.   I fed safe choice years ago when I fed grain and my horses would sometimes refuse to eat, I would try a different bag and they would eat.

Had the same thing happen with my piggies. They will eat almost anything, so when 2 of them refused I knew there had to be something wrong with the grain.
Another reason I will not feed Nutrena anymore is that I get it at TSC. And with all the dc's they have you never know up front which plant the bags came from.

OK, I get it that Nutrena is the bad guy in all this.  But can someone list the feed companies that ARE 100% safe to feed???  And why?

Any feed that is from a mill that also does cattle feed is at risk of being contaminated. Yes they all have "procedures" to prevent cross contamination but you are risking your horse's life on the fact that the people there are doing their job correctly...which lets face it not many people these days take pride in. Last time I checked into all of this I believe all Nutrena product came from cattle/equine mill....so yes I would be worried about feeding Safe Choice or any other Nutrena feed.
I either buy directly from the farmer or I buy feed that comes from an equine only mill.

Not just Nutrena, if you are on facebook, seach for the page "is your horse feed safe", and here is some more information:

This what I do, too. Right now, none of mine are worked hard enough to need grain, so I am feeding alfalfa cubes and grass hay. If I had to add grain it would be Danco's Omni cubes or Blue Bonnet feed. I don't personally know of any other brand of horse feed. I know there are others out there but here in South Texas, that is all I have available.

YES!!  Please!!  I have no idea what to switch to and our area doesn't have a ton of choices.

I feed Renew Gold.  I did have a hard time at first getting them to transfer to it (they all came off of a high sugar feed) but now they gobble it up.  I can get it locally...but you can also buy it from Amazon if your feed store doesn't carry it.

This was a list I made in March of 2015.

Ionophore Free Companies:
Purina
Blue Bonnet
Renew Gold
Manna Pro
Standlee Hay
Buckeye
Progressive Nutrition
Seminole
Ametza Hay Pellets
Total Equine
Chaffehay
Danco/Omni's
Woody's

Triple Crown- Nebraska mill is ionophore free. Seguin TX is supposed to be updating the facility so it will eventually be ionophore free. Byhalia MS is NOT ionophore free!! Recently TC Has had problems with too much sulphur in their feeds and it's been making horses very sick. Use caution.

Nutrena - depends on the mill. Abilene TX is ionophore free. Sterling CO is NOT ionophore free!!

Use extreme caution and ask a ton of questions if you use a local feed mill. At a lot of them if you ask about ionophores you get a blank look. If you ask if they use Monesin or Ruminsen, then they go, "Oh! Yeah we do".

Like I said, this list was made a year and a half ago so it might be slightly outdated. I know Triple Crown had out sourced to Cargill/Nutrena. But then recently Blue Bonnet started milling for them too. But I don't know if they still use Cargill too.

I have no idea about Progressive. Cargill is who makes Nutrena.

Here in Ardmore, OK Tractor Supply just started carrying the Renew Gold. Tempted to try, am feeding Bludbonnet and Omnis cubes and seems to be working for all 3 of mine. Also has anyone tried the Ametza Hay Pellets (just curious)??
