Location: Riding or working in Texas | My favorite 4 year old well almost 5 year old mare is a very picky eater. She is also a hard keeper which dose not help.. She gets great feed twice a day all the grass she can eat and a healthy flake of alfalfa. She is on a regular exercise program and for the most part she looks great.
Here is my frustration she will go through spells where she refuses to eat all of her feed or hay for about a week she eats a little but wont clean it up. I have wondered if its maybe she is in heat and that affects her ?? She tends to drop quite a bit of weight in this time i always get her back but.
Im not sure.. she is wormed, teeth are kept up on, no ulcers... ?
Any ideas would be welcome i will try to upload pics..
I have six other horses on the same or similar feed program and they look amazing

| Have you treated for hind gut ulcers? Leaky gut? I have always found that anytime they go off feed it usually has something to do with their digestion, maybe not ulcers specifically. That or pain somewhere. A horse's nature is to hide pain for survival, although some don't seem to have that instinct,
Let us know if you find out the cause. |

From what my vet told me, no. I had a mare that coliced. We got her over it but she was still showing pain. Took her back to the vet where she stayed all day for observation. He told me I needed to treat her for hind gut ulcers. He said there was no way to check because of how long the horse's gut is. I treated her and she has not shown any sign of pain.

Some people have fed Rantadine(?). But I already had Cur Ost Stomach and the Adapt, so I fed that. My sister has had great success with THE's ulcer meds. |

THE GastroPLUS does wonders for gastric and hind gut ulcers. $110 shipped and they have a new GI Ulcer Support. 80 scoops is $80. Cheaper than some other alternatives and something that can be fed long term without adverse effects.

Location: Texas | the most fail safe method to check for ulcers is with gastroscopy. There's no way to get a scope into the hind gut. We diagnose hindgut ulcers based on the combination of clinical signs, history, we look at a CBC/Chem for evidence, you can ultrasound to try and get a picture of the colonic wall, and theres a fecal occult blood test that's not super reliable. |

Location: Riding or working in Texas | Thank you for the information on ulcers !!! it seams i need to have a second opnion from a vet about the ulcers that seams to be the direction everyone is going.. I had realy thought that there was a possibility that it was when she was in heat because it seams to go hand and hand . |
