| So I am figuring out that there are an array of costumes on Halloween that offend people these days. I just wonder if people are genuinely offended, or feel that way because the media/social platforms tell them they should be.. Dont get me wrong I would never want to offend anyone but it seems like its getting harder and harder to make sure that you do not. |

Our daughter is seven and this is the first year we aren't participating in trick or treating. Last year we had a guy deliberately scaring the younger kids. So tonight, Amber is going to dress up, we're going to make homemade caramel apples, toast pumpkin seeds and watch Halloween movies.
Any more, you can't dress as an Indian, because Indians are offended. Can't be a maid, or maids are offended. Shoot, you can't even dress as a horse, otherwise the cycling mares get upset. |

I just got in an "argument" on tumblr over if dressing up like Tonto or Pochanatos should be considered offensive or not. I am not really sure if there is a right answer or not, but I personally feel like dressing up as a favorite movie character is totally fine. Dressing up like a “reservation princess” or “sexy Indian” maybe not. It is a slippery slope. Pretty soon kids shouldn’t dress up as pirates, because that could be offensive to pirate culture. Kids shouldn’t dress up as ninjas, because that could be offensive to Japanese culture. Women shouldn't dress up as beer girls, because that could be offensive to German culture. And the list goes on, and on, until all we will be left with is dressing up like a bottle of ketchup, but wait, that could be offensive to Heinz. |

Location: 100 miles from Nowhere, AR | My husband and son dressed as shooting victims last night, complete with realistic bloody latex bullet holes, and then we went to town and trick or treated in a multi-racial neighborhood. Everyone laughed. It's mostly the social justice warriors getting their panties in a wad over stupid stuff.
Btw, my daughter was an otter. There's no such thing as an otter costume because who ever heard of a kid who wanted to be an otter for Halloween? So my mom created one and it was awesome. Lord love a Lilly, she is her own person.  |

| I'm Native American. Each tribe has their own custom and tradition. For example, in my tribe, no one wears the headdress you see associated with native attire. However, for some tribes, your aren't allowed to wear the headdress until you earn it. It is my understanding that women don't wear the headdresses either. Likewise, in my tribe, there are certain things you wear only during ceremony. Certain ceremonies are only conducted during certain times of the year and for certain reasons - these also vary from tribe to tribe. Thus, wearing something outside of ceremony isn't appropriate.
For me personally, some of the frustration, at least on my part, is that the history we learn in school is not a full representation of what the US relations were and are. )How can people understand if we don't teach it? (think of the school that is apologizing for referencing the trail of tears on a banner at a football game and the entire mascot issue). I could go on and on ... but I won't.
I personally generally try to stay away from these kinds of outfits out of respect for someone else's culture - regardless of the culture. |

And although I do understand how cultures can see costumes in a less than ideal light, I still don't see a reason to be offended.
If a Native American or some other race wanted to go as a white person, and decided that needed to be a "white trash" or "redneck" or whatever else they decided white to be, I wouldn't be offended.

Location: sunny california | a gal at work dressed up as a redneck girl. she had a plaid shirt with boots and a vest. then she had this ball cap with a built in pony tail. i fixed it for her so the pony tail comes out the hole in the back of the cap. then i politely told her that is how i wear my cap. here i am in my flannel and she turned red LOL it was so funny. i told her not to worry as I am not a snowflake ( must listen to john and ken to understand that!) |
