I hate Houston. LOL let me rephrase that: I would rather go anywhere in the world but Houston....
The pace is way to fast for me, lots of crime, and lots of people everywhere that are very rude and hateful if you mess up their groove to ask for anything, or to just say hi.... It's for sure more of a city than it is a town. Very hard to make friends unless you find a good church. (I don't know how you feel about church but I found it easier to make friends at church than at work or hte street.)
As far as every day goes, traffic is terrible as everyone wants to go 100mph and cut everyone else off and then get mad that they can't go anywhere for the traffic jams. Morning commutes are the worst.

On a positive note the Houston Stock Show and Rodeo is fun so there's that too look forward to each year.

This too. It's as bad as Austin. Lots of Millenials stuck in Texas trying to make it into NYC since they can't go anywhere else. LOL
Think coffee shops with dog menus and vegan menus but judgemental eyes when you ask for anything "uncool" on the menu.

Most employed people DO NOT live in Houston. There are a lot of towns surrounding Houston that are quite nice. Just like Dallas.

I have to second that vote against Houston. My husband travelled from Weatherford to Houston. Our truck got broke into at the hotel. Lots of homeless and much more crime. The traffic is bad...very congested and they go 100 mph! Dallas/Fort Worth traffic can be bad, but Houston is worse. Housing is more expensive too. And it is much more liberal... Houston is a sancuatuary city after all. I would not live there or anywhere around there.

I was born in Texas and wouldn't live anywhere else. That said, I love Dallas, but wouldn't live IN Dallas either, and Houston is even worse. As Streaky said, there are a lot of nice cities just outside of Houston. If you are moving horses, you probably couldn't really even find a place in the City of Houston to afford to have land. I would look in places surrounding the Houston area, and then sigh really big if you have to make a drive into Houston to work!!

Good luck!!!

Odds are she wouldn't be living in the 5th ward.

If you like Az. you will love Houston, everything about this state is superior to Az.

Β My husband has an opportunity to transfer, but I don't want to be too far from the grand babies. My choice would be N. Arizona, just don't know yet.

We have lived here for 20 years but have always lived outside the metroplex.  There are a lot of great areas, north of Houston is very pretty but traffic is a bear on 45.  My husband has a 45 minute drive to work without traffic.

What type of work does he do? Me I have never liked Houston, just to darn busy and over populated, and I bet finding a good school would be on the hard side. Now the smaller towns close would be a better choice, I know Huntsville is a pretty town , well it used to be 20 years ago, not sure now. ...

Born and raised south of H-town. Been here over 50 years. Yes it's hot but that's why we have AC, fire ants eat all the ticks and humidity...well there is that. Not all people are rude or drive 100. I have always lived on the outskirts and driven 30-45 minutes to work. In doing so, I make $30-40k more than elsewhere. Money and jobs are great. More liberals in Austin. I work in the museum district and it's beautiful. Most winters are mild. I know I could do much worse.

These negative comments are definitely about Houston proper, not the suburbs or areas even further out than that.  There are plenty of places surrounding Houston that are quite nice.  I don't see much difference in the 'city' part of it from all the other cities mentioned.  It has such a wide variety of cultures that you could find the one you are looking for at one place or another.  I live 100 miles from the center of the city and my rural community couldn't be more hillbilly redneck if it tried.  It is a very mild winter, rarely freezes.  Summers are hot and sticky but rarely over 100.  I forget what part of AZ you are in and what you are used to.

I was down that way a few weeks ago picking up a horse and dropping another off. There were several nice places I saw with horses. It had a very rural feel to it to be that close to the city.

Depending on the area your hubby would be working will dictate where you end up. Any idea where?
I think what you are wanting to know is ....
Tons of barrel races, horse people, great vets, good hay, tons of rain, and no snow.

Plus I might have a house, 40 acres & 5 stall barn I might be willing to rent. 35 minutes east of IAH.

We lived and worked about 30-45 miles west of Houston just off I-10 30 some years ago for a few years.  I had outside jobs the whole time we lived there.  Very hot and muggy in the summers, can be cold and damp for the short winter.  Mosquitos year around, they just got bigger in the winter!  They about ate our horses up!  A lot of bugs and mold.  Not my choice for a place to live.  We had some opportunities there that we would not have had anywhere else, so we were blessed in that way!   A little ways farther west or north and it gets less swampy.  Oh yes, gators and water moccasins!  Fun stuff!
