My horse was having some lameness issues that we couldn't find for a while. He would limp just when starting his walk but once moving he was fine. After feeling like it wasn't improving, my vet suggested some x-rays as he was thinking there might be some changes to his navicular bones (both sides but more so in the right) in the front. That was confirmed. He suggested changes to his shoeing, pull the shoe back a little, etc. Farrier came out and made the changes and my horse has a thin hoof wall and quicked him with a hot nail - on the left. Noticeable right away, so pulled the offending shoe, put betadine in the nail holes and put the shoe back on. Ridden the next day. Great ride, moving wonderfully and we were thinking he's back on the right track. Things were great for 24 hours. The next day, I noticed he was in pain and wasn't interested in meeting me at his feed bucket (very unusual). Gave him some bute and waited until he made his way to the bucket. First few steps very sore then walked out of it. Farrier came out and took the shoe off and we again poured betadine in the nail holes and all over the hoof per the vet's direction. Now, 4 days later he's still having the same issue ... lame for the first few steps and then he's fine. I'm thinking he may have an abcess but am not certain. Planning on packing his hoof today, but am wondering when I should start worrying?

ETA: we gave the osphos shot ... were hoping to see great results. Jury is still out since he can't be ridden right now.

TIA

Sounds like an abscess, a deep one.    I had one from a hot nail a few years ago.  Took quite a while before it surfaced, out the coronet band.  Went up instead of down.  Those take longer.
Soak in hot epsom salts and make sure the horse is moving around regularly.  Standing around doesn't help anything.

a gelding of mine had the same thing happen and it turned into an abscess. Soaked in warm iodine and Epsom salt water(very little iodine-looks like weak tea) and painted on iodine-dmso mix on the cornet band for a week and it blew out the top. perfectly sound after, just kept the area clean and put shoes back on him. I painted the soles of his feet with straight iodine to harden them back up. Try not to get any around the frog though.

You'll have to go to your vet to get the 7% iodine

Like a month or so. Almost to the next round of shoes.

I was afraid you were going to say that ... of course this has to happen when the Arizona starts its prime barrel racing season. *sigh*

I hope everyone will take caution from this injury with a hot nail by keeping a small bottle of 100% Turpentine on hand.

Turpentine will dry the live laminae of the hoof wall the nail penetrated and seal the nerve endings off so there is no pain. It will also help on stopping an infection similar to a sand crack abscess.... that has to work its way up towards the coronet band before splitting the hoof to drain and relieve the pressure.

Use a syringe as an eye dropper to doctor the nail holes ....>>>>>

If hot nail was a small jerk and flinch situation putting a few drops in the nail holes of the shoe may suffice. Most farriers will reset the nail .. doctor it with turpentine while he has the nail out of the hoof and again after nail reset along with the other nail holes as a precaution.

Continue the turpentine drops 2-3 times a day for 2-3 days ... most times pain will go away within 24 hours ... the continued doctoring is in case the reset nail wants to rub and open up the nerve endings again.

I am surprised that no one has said anything about the vet changing the flight path of this horses hoof by setting the shoe back.... which means more toe would be taken off and sore the tendons and possibly the heel depending on how the change causes the horse hoof to contact the ground.
Even if the hot nail had not happened ... the horse would be unlevel in the front end with two different shoeing methods and would affect his hoof turnovers due to a long toe short toe setup... not to mention the affects this has on the rears overreaching or just out of cadence with the front feet ...

If he belonged to me ... I would pull both shoes off the front and leave the rears intact. Rasp the front feet to round the hoof rims into a mustang roll to prevent cracking or chipping due to nail holes. Doctor him with the turpentine per above and time will decide if an infection got planted into the hoof wall by the hot nail ..

If horse remains in pain .. use your bute or aspirin to alleviate the pain so he can use that foot/frog to pump blood to the area and start an Epson salt warm 30 minute soak daily to draw the abscess to the surface .. usually the path of least resistance .. so keep an eye on the sole of the hoof too ..

When too much help and changes have created a mess. I have found backing off and starting all over is the answer until horse is no longer in pain and running and bucking in the pasture ... and then ... I would extend his off time until you need a full set of shoes ... and shoe him as he stands as you had been doing before this mess started.

FYI: Use of turpentine .. wrap a small hand towel around coronet band while doctoring if you lift his foot up ... turpentine can blister if it gets into the hair line especially if it is pink skin ...
Keep in mind the hoof is not going to soak up anything like a sponge .. so use hoof meds like you would when painting a wall ... a wet layer is all you need.

GOOD LUCK

Sounds like a very very deep abcess! Dealt with a similar situation. My horse got a hot nail from my farrier. I did every possible thing you could think of. 2 months go by and everyday I got worse worrying. One vet told me to hook up the truck and trailer and take him for a little haul. Sure enough, half hour later it popped from the top. LOL hope your guy heals fast!

Thanks everyone. I'm trying not to get too wound up, but this poor horse has been through so much.

Like a month or so. Almost to the next round of shoes.

Had this happen to our best futurity horse this year.  She got a hot nail the 4th of July.  Which turned into a deep abcess.  Took her until mid August to finally be completely over it.
