| Just wondering how many of you are packing when you're on the road and what issues you run into. Obviously you'd have to know the laws for each state you're traveling to. I'm curious if most grounds prohibit firearms? If so I guess you'd just disassemble and lock it up? And if you're in a state that also allows open carry, which you do you prefer?
Just thoughts I have while trying to fall asleep... |

Location: LA Lower Alabama | Always packing. I never open carry as it invites trouble. I have a Ruger LC9 thats small enough for me to carry anywhere honestly but if I am driving its within arms reach and if im walking out and about I have a few different holsters. I have other items here and there as well. |

Location: Smack Dab in the Middle | I've had my CCL for about a year now, and I do use it. I carry a Ruger SR9c, because it fits my hand well and I'm comfortable with it. But I can operate my husbands guns as well.
My husband and I took the class for the reciprocity laws. Kansas has constitutional open carry, and I find open much more comfortable, but typically I conceal simply because it causes less weird stares and stupid questions. Yes, I'm female, yes I'm a natural blonde, yes I'm 5 feet tall, yes I can back my own trailer, and yes, I can probably shoot better than you.
We also have taken multiple classes on handgun vitals--which is not only shooting, but things like clearing stoppages, one handed operation, rapid reloads, shooting from multiple positions, shooting under stress, target selection, etc. They also went over a little on how to handle a shooting situation and how to relay that you are a good guy to witnesses and cops.
I always have a loaded and racked gun in the console of my pickup with extra mags. My husband carries in his big truck and has since a suicidal guy, high on drugs, tried to step up on his step and open his door, AFTER trying to step out in front of his truck on the interstate.
I am glad that I live in a constitutional carry state, however, that doesn't mean I think everyone should carry a gun just because they can. You need to be educated on how to work it safely, and keep up that education, and practice gun handling fairly regularly.
I've only been to one grounds that has signage about firearms, and it was only open carry that was not allowed. I however didn't carry in the building. I didn't disassemble, I just locked it in the case (loaded) and locked it in my pickup.

Location: Texas | I don't like open carry so I always conceal. Most grounds I've been to don't usually have signage up in regards to firearms and I don't normally carry on the grounds anyway. I just keep my firearm in my truck, loaded condition three. |

Location: In the Hills of Texas | Just would like to add....when Texas passed the open carry the libs went nuts and said how scared they were and how scared their children were...etc. etc. All the hype didn't happen. We've seen one person carrying openly and there hasn't been any scary stories on the very liberal news of San Antonio about anything bad happening because of this new law. The same people that were "So Scared" love to advertise about places being gun free zones. Now where do you think criminals are going to go to shoot people or rob places? If a store or restaurant posts no guns allowed...we don't go in. |

| Here's a convenient resource for all who travel and carry.
handgunlaw.us
It gives a nice summary of gun laws by state as well as all reciprocity.

Location: The best kept secret in TX | I have mine! I carry mine in my waistband with a plastic "lock" over the trigger. It's called a trigger guard. My shirt covers my pistol. Holsters make me sweaty and are way to uncomfy for me. I usually leave it in the truck at fairgrounds and inform the office staff that I have it on the property and show them my CCL. They usually glance at it and say thank you and that's about it. Sometimes They write notes down about it but not all the time. So I attach my plastic guard to my belt loop, slide the lock into place and tuck it in my waistband. Shirt goes over it and I never have a problem. The reason I like the lock is because I can literally pull my gun out and the clip falls off and it's ready to shoot. I can keep the safety off if I am in an area where I feel the need to and I can keep one chambered without the risk of it going off or malfunctioning and not being able to chamber one in a situation.
When I'm traveling I have an under dash mount in most of the trucks so that it's right there. I keep it in the center console when the two older girls are with us tho just in case I need to leave the truck. Out of sight out of mind. They know not to open the center console. I keep a clip in it but I don't chamber one if it's in the console.
I will try and find a pic of the lock and mount I have.

| It's great to read that so many have their permits! I do too! I have a Nano but want something smaller. I also do mounted shooting so have a couple.45's. And a shotgun for shooting trap. I have a gun safe in my home to lock up everything. If I am going on a road trip mine is usually in my truck. And my 80 lb. Doberman. Lol I try to get out to the range on Sunday evenings. The best way to be comfortable with a firearm is to burn up a lot of gun powder! My area has a monthly womens group that we try to get women out who have and have not shot before. No men are at the range other than whoever the speaker is and usually 2 of the husbands to assist on the range. This helps to make it less intimidating to new gals to give it a try. I think in all of my trips to the range I have only ever seen 2 women though outside of ladies night. |

Location: CTX | I carry as much as I can. My work won't allow it, but outside that my lil' .38s is on my hip. It's a revolver, which I feel has less chance of jamming. I also have a small 9mm auto that I can carry. The hubster has a 40cal that he carries. Adn we have several others running around the house. (we don't have kids, so no worries there) A .22 lever action lives in the mudroom, and we have a shotgun nearby for intruders. The rest lives in in our gunsafe. When I am not carrying it the 38s is in my nightstand, so it's available when needed at night. I looked into and actully bought one of the concealed carry purses (it was cute), but ended up not using it for carrying. Not for the reason stated earlier (again, no kids), but just for the reason they can seperate it from your body. When you carry on your person it is so much more difficult to part with it. |

Cranky, the idea of the weapon being off body IS the point! Had the weapon been on body that Mother would still be alive! |

While I commend you for carrying, I must disagree about Open Carry. In my not so humble opinion OC DOES NOT invite trouble. In fact just the opposite. Cause criminals are basically cowardly who primarily prey upon the weak. And d really life scenarios illustrate this. |

| The reason I don't openly carry is simple. I don't want anyone to know I am packing. In some cases - yes - open packing MIGHT discourage an cowardly bad guy. But in many other cases- the bad guy is just going to shoot the open carry person before anyone else. The bad guy will probably not be openly packing - so you probably won't see it coming. I prefer the option of deciding if I want to draw my gun or not. |
