We live near Bastrop and are looking for hay feeders. My wife wants something safe where they won't have a tendency to rub their manes off. We have 4 geldings, including a yearling in one pasture, and 3 mares in the other. She wants something covered (I don't care if it is). We have large square bales.

Any suggestions?

Have you looked at the Tarter equine hay basket? You said you have large square bales, and I think the website says small... Don't know if that would work, but it looked interesting! They do have other hay feeders, as well.

Your standard round bale feeders for horses that have the loops to separate horses from each other would work .... it is the cow feeders that they have to stick their heads through ...

Or like these feeders ... they will hold 6+ regular square bales ... I have 2 for sale since I am moving ... you can weld some square tubing to each end to put a roof over them ... something like these heavy duty feeders will last a life time ..

I built a couple of these.  This pic is of the one I copied.  I put a square ton bale in it and it last 8 horses about 2 weeks during the winter.  I have it in a seperate corral that I let the horses into during the night.  Keeps the bale off the ground.  They eat it fast enough that the top is not really that useful.

The cost to ship from them was a factor for me... but I do like their product. I got a Prefeirt round bale feeder that far better quality than any others I looked at around Austin. Depending on how big your squares are it could work although there isn't a roof. I just got the plain without the loops on top.

I'm not all that stuck on having a roof, but that's what the boss loves.

Do y'all have trouble with the horses fighting? I just don't see my 5 being in that close of quarters and not having issues with each other. I'd really like one of these!

I like the hay hut- $700 or so though. Right now I'm using our homemade ring that
lasts a roll around 6 days for 6 horses. But I really want a haltbar hay trap.

Hey Bear; You have a nice plan with the wooden one ... you could easily
change it over to pipe // metal .. with wood chest boards

Make it smaller to fit your bales and make two of them ... make sure
you can move them from a worn out spot to a new spot ...
with your hay spikes on a tractor or bobcat ..

30 ft apart your horses will choose one or the other and the side
they eat from ...

Then you would have pure happiness on the homestead!!!

I love my bale barn I use a hay chix net with it. Used it for 2 years and never had one mane rubbed out. I can flip it over the bale myself. I live in windy South Dakota and it's never blown over. Keeps the rain and snow out as well. www.balebarns.com

Seems like any type of roof or cover would only stop the hay from getting wet if the rain was coming straight down.  Any wind with the rain and it would still get the hay wet.

Not really.  They have thier pecking order.  I have one mare that will wait until the others have eaten for a bit before she will venture into the crowd.

I'm wondering how well the wood would hold up down here. Wood doesn't seem to last long. I like this feeder.

If you wanted to feed squares, you could use the rolling trash cans with the lid on them and put an entire bale in.  I have a couple trash cans with plans to do that, cut a whole in the bottom.  Hay doesn't get wet, they still eat off the ground, and it's gravity fed.  I don't have a picture hand, but I bet someone does.

We have a new semi load of large squares, Herbie. These are 3X3X8 foot squares.....not the small ones. I like the idea though.

I have seen those and have a hard time imagining that a horse wouldn't just tear it up. Maybe they wouldn't, I don't know.
