One day we received a call from our Barrel Horse trainer, Todd Burger.
He had a palomino mare in training and thought she might fit my style.
I tried her, fell in love, brought her home, and gave her the name
"Lucy". Off of I love Lucy (my Grandmothers favorite show). Lucy
and I ran for a year or so, making the prettiest patterns, hitting
the 4d then the 3d, and then that was it. I remember thinking
maybe this is all she is going to be..a consistent 3D horse behind
Chico, but she would soon prove me wrong. Todd, who is Mary
Burgers son called and asked if his mom could borrow Chico
(who he also trained) for Calgary. So while Todd delivered
Chico to Mary up north, I was at home, with the IFYR coming
up. The next best horse I had at the time was Lucy, who, I have
to be honest.. I was sure had no chance at keeping up with those
horses at the IFYR, but she was my only option. The first round
was awful, so awful she was almost 2 seconds off the pace..All
I could think after my run was I wish I had Chico here, but at the
same time I was excited for him and Mary. The second round came
and Lucy came alive for the first time in 6 years, running the fastest
time of the week! From there on out she decided the 1d was where
she would stay, even outrunning Chico or being right on his tail
every run following that day! When Mary did so well with Chico,
we joked that the next time she made the NFR we wished she
would take Chico as a backup. How cool to see one of your
horses run down the alley at the Thomas and Mack.
Well years went by, Chico was sold, and has now taken an early
retirement at home with us. So my dreams of one of my horses
running at the NFR were over. Or so I thought wink emoticon;).
Last night our Lucy, trained by Todd Burger, owned by Nicoletta
Marchesi Bean , ended up in the hands of Mary Burger, at the
NFR, as a backup horse. This is just as good as Chico being there,
maybe better, since at one point I didn't think she would be
any more than a 3D horse. I am so happy that she was even
an option of Mary's, much less chosen to run.
I have been extremely blessed to be able to keep up with Lucy
over the past 6 years and SHE has been blessed with some
amazing owners and riders. Thanks to my husband, I will soon
get to wrap my arms around her neck in Vegas! I tear up just
thinking about it! Mary, may God continue to bless you at the
NFR and keep you safe. We love watching you!

Let's thank the ground keepers for tamping the soft spot at the
2nd barrel that created all the knocked barrels in Round 6!!
HA HA .. Granma Mary outsmarted everyone and made that sweeping
turn at 3rd and stayed out of the loose dirt and kept that long strided
buckskin's momentum on the run home and whacked the clock!!

going to be 2nd in command!!...
Was glad to see Ivy Conrado show some confidence and tighten up
the pattern and run harder with her horse .... picked up 2nd place
with a 13:63 !!

| 2016 BARREL HORSE OF THE YEAR
The AQHA and the WPRA annually honors the top equine partners that carry WPRA members to the winners circle. In 2016, the top 25 voted CFour Tibbie Stinson (Tibbie) as the Barrel Horse of the Year. Tibbie is owned by Kelly and Ivy Conrado and the 7-year old mare has carried Ivy to her first Wrangler National Finals Rodeo.
