Just wondering what well-known sires or broodmare sires some of you who currently ride LOTS of young futurity age colts or OTT colts have found to produce colts who are spooky or extra watchy by nature (but athletic nevertheless). I'm not talking about man-made spooky if that makes sense. Lol. Thanks!

OMG I'm literally gonna probably be known as crazy on here (because I always bring it up) but any stud that produces babies like this goes on my list for PSSM suspects   I don't want to make people mad by bringing up some names I know (including my own type 2 who is bred to the hilt and very fragile lol) but the PSSM forum on FB would have a list of type 1 and 2 suspects you could look through!

The horse's that produce the top barrel horses certainly do not produce fragile minded horses. The people who ride/train many horses and are winning don't bother with the ones that are fragile minded. That does not make them a bad trainer, it makes them an honest trainer.

Thanks Cheeks, I'll do a Facebook search and check out that list. :-)

Hi, Streaky. Thanks for responding. Maybe "fragile" wasn't a good word to use. What I was trying to find out was which NEWER race sires were becoming recognized for producibg sure enough runners but also colts with gobs of natural talent as barrel horses. At the same time I meant colts that needed more culling than first expected because their focus was all over the place.

I've had a lot of cowbred horses and I'd have to say in my experience/opinion I would say the Two Eyed Jacks have had the spookiest personalities but have Been super smart. Just more looky, spooky on trails or new places but never cease to do their jobs.

The quietest horses I've had have been streaking six horses.

I would think anything with cutting breeding would be some of your watchy/alert/atheletic/sensitive types. I have a son of Tuff Lena I run who is very much like that. Super light and easy to ride, but very alert and might spook over something silly when he's fresh. My husband has a cutting bred mare he heels on and she is super quick footed and watchy. I was warming her up in the arena before a barrel race once (granted she's not seasoned for barrels yet) and she jumped the stake rope for the first barrel lol. They are goofy and it can be aggravating at times, but they are so quick and athletic that it's worth it.

I don't have a ton of input on this, but my mare is very hot, watchy, and spooky. I have had her since she is 2 and is now 12, she hasn't improved a whole lot, but I have only had limited windows of really being able to log the miles on her. So, it could just be lack of wet saddle blankets. She is Streakin Six on the botttom.

Thx alot for your input. I've got some friends who agreed while heartedly with you about the cutting bred.. Sometimes aggravating but totally worth it for their ability in the arena.. If you're younger than your 60's lol!. I was thinking more of keeping my eye on some claimers on the track so was kinda wondering about colts in that direction too.

I have ridden cutting bred horses all my life and none of them were spooky or watchy. A friend of mine has a freckles playboy mare who is watchy but her Dam was the same way. However, I know many other freckles playboy horses who were not spooky or watchy at all.

I have heard this about driftwood horses, I have a lone drifter gd x sunfrost and she didn't have a ton of handling but so far I don't see her living up to the stereotype. She is only 2 but I have saddled her without issues. She is more standoffish but hard to know if it is lack of exposure or bloodlines. She bonds with her "person" but is more reserved with others. Definitely a mare I will be "socializing" quite a bit.

TEJ horses have always been super stubborn for me. Smart but stubborn. Not dealt with the spooky nature, if anything they had no fear and were not afraid of start a battle.

I had a horse triple bred go man go who was fragile minded. He also had a rough upbringing so hard to know if it was nature vs nurture.

Docs Lynx. I have had 3 going back to him, plus been around more and they've all been a little fruity. Good, talented horses, but wiring was a little wonky :)

I had a maternal granddaughter of JOH and she was sooo very fragile minded. Had so much talent, heart and try but I could not keep her mind in the right place for the life of me.

The Special Efforts I have been around can run but needed a trainer who would allow some quirks and move on. Doesn't mean they all will but just seems to be the local case.

Yes, I totally agree. I rode a daughter and she was all of that. Put any kind of pressure on her, she'd fall apart! Now that shes gotten older, Ive followed her throughout her few owners shes had and shes pretty solid now. Takes a special kind of person to love her thru her quirks though!

My Two Eyed Jack mare (who is double bred TEJ top and bottom ) is very mellow on the ground and in your pocket. She wants to please sooooo bad, but just wants to GO GO GO when you're on her back because she is so anxious and no matter how much walking/bending/whatever you do, she thinks we need to ruuuuuuun.

I think there WAY more people who MAKE spooky, fragile-minded, watchy, or hot-headed horses, than sires who make them.

Horses are just like any other animal, they are going to be scared of the unknown, so if you get them good exposure to things, and build a trusting relationship, they aren't going to be as scared as others who have just stood in a stall all day everyday and ate hot a$$ feed and never left their buddies.

I have ridden a lot of different horses and some of which could have been described as some of the above, at first. A natural diet, consistent riding, hauling them places, discipline when they need it, they all became nice horses to be around and ride anywhere.

I have a double bred TEJ who can be goofier than a loon on the ground and the safest place to be is on her back. She isn't hot at all. She is a great kids horse. Moved her grain bucket 10 inches to the right on Saturday and she stared at it for a full 5 minutes, and blew at it with her nostrils, before she'd walk up to it.
