Location: Montana | How cold does it have to get for you before you quit riding? For me I think anything under about 20 degrees (depending on conditions) is too cold (for me and for my horses, I worry about them getting sweaty and chilled and it being hard in their lungs). But I thought I would get other's takes on it.

Location: You never know where I will show up...... | If the wind is not blowing and it's not snowing I will ride in subzero weather, no problem.
It's been single digits/subzero here for going on 2 weeks and I've ridden every day.
It's not fun but I have a lot of young horses that can't afford a bunch of time off, so I tough it out. |

Location: Running barrels or watching nascar | I take time off until the first of the year, just so the horses and I don't burn out. I definitely won't go if the wind is blowing even one bit or below zero but if the it's a balmy 15 or so degrees, sure I might. I'm also kind of a wimp when it comes to footing so if that's not ideal, I'll put them on the walker instead. |

| I have a real problem with wind. I paid my dues growing up and riding in gales.
I'll ride in anything, -20 to too hot, as long as the wind isn't making life miserable. |

Never ever had a problem with getting them sweaty then throwing a cooler on to dry off with it being single digits out! |

Location: In The Snow, AZ | I'm a wimp. I'll ride in 20s as long as there's no wind. But I don't enjoy it. We've had a nice winter so far for Flagstaff. We are typically in the high 20s, low 30s. And under a couple feet of snow by now. But up until a few days ago, we have been sitting in the 40s. Just hit the low 30s and blisteringly cold wind. I'm rethinking keeping my

| Got to remember that their windpipe is a lot longer than ours, so air has more time to warm up before it hits the lungs.
I take about a month or 6 weeks off regardless of the weather. Then as long as I can stay reasonably warm I'll ride a bit. I usually ride 1 and pony 1 to minimize time outside.

I don't ride when it is in the low 40ties... that's when we all start complaining about the cold. This front right now is supposed to drop it into the 20ties tomorrow. Not sure how and if we will make it through it.... :/ |

I feel ya! We aren't quite as cold as you (last night got to -24 out), but holy smoke it was about 5 degrees today and the wind was wicked, it felt way colder than below zero with no wind. I guess I'll just sit back and bask in my wimp-dom and wait for it to warm up a little, LOL. |

What boots do you ride in?
My cut off now has become 0* as my finger tips start to turn white and lose feeling. This just started in the last year, not sure why?! |

I will be camping out in front of the fire all day!! Mind you, it was 80F yesterday, and we are not used to these temps here in TX....
Veintiocho, if you find out what the reason is for you fingers turning white, pls share. I've had 1 finger do this when it gets nasty cold. (so for the past few winters it didn't happen since we stayed relatively warm here) |

Yep, our temps around here is like a yoyo, I was sweating yesterday trying to get my plants and animals ready for this windy event, now I'm all wraped up and cold when I have to go outside to walk the little doggies and go feed the horses and goats, not liking this at all, lol.. |

I just ride in Ariats. No insulation. I have the heavy thick insulated UnderAmour socks though. When I am out doing my chores I have insulated muck boots. My feet never get cold. |

I agree with y'all--i don't see how the northern folks on here do it!! Our horses are blanketed again and were fed a warm meal tonight, dogs are on their beds under heat lamps, and I'm under a blanket watching the Kilchers celebrate past Christmases on Alaska: The Last Frontier!! Last night at this time we had tornado watches out in 70 degree weather; right now it's 28 with 18 wind chill. We may get to single digits wind chill---been awhile since we've been this cold. |

Location: SW North Dakota | I'd prefer sunny and no wind, then the temps don't seem to matter much. If the cows need to be gathered (like they do this week), we will pick the best day, but probably single digits. If the cows get out (thankfully this rarely happens), we ride in -40 and wind. Funny how your priorities change! HAHA!

Location: SE Missouri | UGH, this was good to read! I've got my filly coming home from the trainer soon (first time to send a young one out but super excited about her) and I've got to get my brain wrapped around cold weather riding! Wind Chill of -4 this morning and my feet always freeze (wool socks and muck boots are the closest to comfortable I have gotten).
So, all you brave souls in the north will be my reminders of not being a wimp!! |
