| First off I know what could possibly happen by giving this. However, I have a horse that has been hurt and built up bad anxiety to the first barrel and goes up the wall. I ran her being hurt not being able to find what was wrong with her. I have finally got the problem solved and sound. But in her mind she is not sound!!!! I have done slow work after slow work! She will only run up the wall at a show when she gets all nervous. Mind you she NEVER done this before she got hurt. Have talked to several people and they suggested giving her chlorpromazine to get her past this point. Just wanting other opinions or if something else has worked for you. Also has anybody ever used the pills of 100mg? If so how many did you give? Please no rude comments. Like I said I HAVE DONE slow work and she is not blown up and she doesn't get run at home. She is a very stubborn mare! |

Hey there!! Have you tried going to the other first barrel first??? Sometimes that can go a long way in helping with this type of anxiety. I use ACE not chlorpromazine but I know lots who do with lots of success! |

Location: WYOMING | Ive seen it used in this way before with lots of success. Used it for a nervous related gate issue. After a few times she went in quiet. I dont prefer ace as I found it made them dull and heavy, chlor did not. |

If she were mine, I'd certainly try other calming supplements before using the chlor. It just seems like you're going straight to more extreme measures without trying lower dosage options first. Maybe THE Calming Cookies or something like that. I have used those, and they did work. Good luck. It sounds like it's going to be a long road to her mental recovery, even once you do find something that works. Just be patient with her and give her the time she needs to heal mentally. |

Very true. Ace is just a tranquilizer. Chlor is an anti psychotic schizophrenic human drug. My vet said i could try it but IF they have a reaction to it, it's really ugly and most of the time the horse never recovered. Maybe try Sedivet. It's more expensive than ace but some say you don't get that dullness. Guamabenz is another option to. |

| I'd probably try guamabenz first and just use chlor as a last resort. I did have a horse I ran on chlor and she handled it fine but there are definitely other options as well. I'd also consider switching witch barrel you go to first just to switch it up! |

Location: Bandera, TX | Talk to your vet about Propranolol 80-120mg. Most need to know it's best given with protein to increase bioavaliability. You don't want to use it if you have a horse with lung disease. There's risk factors to any medication you may choose to give, know those risks.
In my recent past I had a mare that I spent lots of $ on trying to fix her second barrel issue. I should have treated her like a business. She couldn't perform so she should have been fired. If you try give it two years if no success-move on.
Can the mare handle fast work at home and not get rattled. If so, I would keep proceeding forward. Good Luck. |

Never used it, and won't.
There are many different supplements that have similar positive effects that I would try first, such as valerian root.
I would also reevaluate the slow work you have done. Not all slow work is created equal, and sometimes you will have to sacrifice a year of entries and do slow competition runs to teach the horse the arena is a safe place.
Also the horse may be too far gone, if she worked while in pain, she may have flipped you the bird, and may never come back, with or without drugs. |
