Are you talking about "Medi-Share"? My husband and I have been with them for a few years, starting when Obama made it so everyone had to have insurance.

I joined CHM about a year ago when we needed some sort of coverage because of obama care. I work part time as a dental hygienist at two offices so I dont qualify for any health insurance.  I have the highest plan of a 5000 out of pocket per incident with a 45 dollar a month fee. I dont go to the doctor much, if ever, so it works perfect for me if I ever get in an accident.

Thanks for your replies. I need something for about 6 months. My BCBS went up to above $900 a month so I checked into CHM insurance. It seems like a good deal. I don't go to the Dr. that much either, just yearly check ups and mammogram. I think I will try it out!

I have it.  My son has it.  No complaints here.  We don't go to the Dr. very often either,
so it works good for us.

I would like to hear from those who HAVE had health issues and have CHCM. How much hassle has it been to negotiate with hospitals and doctors to get the insurance negotiated rates rather than the outrageous amounts that are charged without insurance. THERE to me, is the biggest contributor to the cost of medical care. I had my appendix out last year and the total charges BEFORE the insurance negotiated rate was over 50K but somehow I didn't quite reach my $7500 figure.

If I HAD reached my OOP the total cost paid with my $5999 deductible and the 80/ paid for the next $2500, the total actually paid for the procedure was $17500..... a far cry from over 50K.

We switched to Medishare this year. I like the ministry and the program behind it. We have had a few dr visits and pharmacy so far but we also chose $7500 Annual Household portion. My biggest concern is we use 4 wheelers alot on the ranch and any atv accident without a helmet is not covered. So when I spray weeds or check cows or such I usually do not grab a helmet.

Isn't that crap ridiculous?  My $210,000 hospital bill was negotiated down to $52,000 by the insurance company. Why can't people paying out of pocket pay the same as the insurance companies?

I remember YEARS ago it was the exact opposite. My MIL needed surgery, but they didn't have insurance, so the doctor took cash and since he was going to be paid much quicker, he gave them a good discount. Insurance just boggles my mind anymore.

I have had it for about 5 years now, I have the middle plan with 1000.00 personal responsibility that covers only inpatient out patient hospital incidents. I have not made a claim though- so can not speak to the process.

We have it, but have not had a claim yet. However, the gal that owns Hired Gun posted just a few days ago about her experience with them--they had TWO hospital stays since the beginning of the year--and it was nothing but positive!

A lot of times you can pay the same as insurance would. I work for personal injury attorneys and sometimes our clients will go get an MRI, or have some other kind of procedure and ask for the cash price. It is about 3/4ths of what it would be if they had of filed on insurance. It tends to be about the same as the insurance company would have paid after adjustments and contractual agreements with the providers.

Ok, we ended up signing up with CHM this year because our insurance was beyond ridic.  For a family of 4 on the highest level plan, it's $450/month.  First $500 of an incident comes out of your pocket, the rest is paid.  Basically you're paying for preventative care out of your pocket (by saving $1000/month on premiums, that's easy to afford), but if you can bundle enough things together at once, you can still get some of that paid for.  Same with sick visits.  The random sick visit, you'll be paying out of pocket, but if you have a lot going on at once to get you above the $500, then they start paying on it.  We are responsible for negotiating a discount for paying cash, the group doesn't do it for you, although they will help you out where they can on that.  The gold level pays a limited amount on pre-existing conditions for the first 3 years and then it's not considered pre-existing anymore.  They have a program for catastrophic claims called Brother's Keeper.  If you're a gold level, it's $75/quarter for the entire family and the coverage is unlimited.  We also get a discount group drug card to help out with that.

This is a lot like what old school insurance was, where you have some responsibiltiy for yourself but are covered for anything that would be a financial burden.  I researched the crap out of CHM as well as the other similar programs, talked to many people using them, and everything was positive from those with first hand experience.  We chose this one because it was the best fit for our family.  Their website goes into great detail explaining everything.  If you're interested, I suggest visiting the site because it answered every question I had.
