| How long does it take for white hair to show up on a horse? Just noticed my gelding has white hair on his back, never noticed when I bought him. I know it was not from me riding him, because I've only ever had a saddle on him once for 15 minutes. |

| Not sure what a happy spot is.
Its in the same spot on the other side, but more scattered roan hairs, not the white dot

| I can't think of the technical name for them, but a happy spot is just that. Kind of an old wives tale, but basically a horse develops white or dark colored spots when they are happy. Good care, nutrition, and love are the usual culprits.
My two geldings both get them. They randomly occur and then disappear, moving around their bodies. Neither one had them when I got them and they've developed over the years. It's always fun finding them. I'll see if I can find the one good one I have of my horse's cheek where he got a big one.
Your horse's spots look pretty much like happy spots. |

Location: never in the right place | my sorrel started roaning and then he started with spots. I think they are birdcatcher spots. He doesn't know if he wants to be sorrel, appy, roan or palomino, as he has buff colored front feet and blonde under his tail. lol

If they are in the exact same spot on the other side, (I missed that and re-read) it's quite possible they are from the saddle. Got any pics of the saddle without the pad on your horse? |

| I have heard of black spots being called "speed" spots. If that is true my horse should be the fastest sucker in the world. |

Location: Texas | If they're in the same area on either side of the withers I would be more inclined to think that it's because of poor saddle fit which can result in nerve damage, causing the white spots. |

Its not from my saddle because he hasn't been rideable for me due to back pain. So had to have been from the previous owner. Why I was asking how long white spots take to show up. |

| One of my sorrel horses will get white spots here and there. When he sheds off in the spring or fall, they relocate. Sometimes he has a coontail and sometimes he he doesn't. Vet said itcwas the Appaloosa coming out. Laughing |

I'd say it depends on how bad the saddle trauma was when it happened. Friend has a little mare that was rode for 30 days as a 2 yo by the amish and has huge white spots. Other times, if it's not as bad, may take a little bit to show up. |
