| So I don't know who all seen Fallon Taylors picture today of her loosing weight and getting weight off the horse to help it run better. It hit me ( not a fallon fan) but makes since. So have to ask are breast collars really nessaary. or just in the way. Good saddle fit shouldn't need one right. and another thing fallon clinic are outrageous expensive . |

Location: Texas | IMO Breast collars are really only necessary if you're doing actual work on a horse like roping, dragging, etc. I think they're more for cosmetic purposes in the barrel racing world. |

Location: British Columbia | I think breast collars can come in handy, in cases where tack malfunctions, but overall, when I'm just riding colts or in the arena, I don't use one. For barrel runs, I'll put one on, in CASE the saddle slips.
And yes, Fallon clinics are overpriced and I would invest my money in an eyeball piercing before attending one.

| Good insight, I was thinking the same but didn't know if I was all alone in this aspect. It never hit me till I seen it put that way. Why have tack that is not needed in a fastest time sport. |

| I've seen enough saddles slip back during a barrel run to decide that breast collars in competition are for me. |

Location: Florida | The purpose of a breast collar is to keep the saddle from slipping back. They don't have to be tight. Think of them like a seat belt, hope you never need it, but when you do you are very glad it is there. |

Amen! And on that note I'll add that I will NOT run with a BC without a back cinch, that's asking for a mess if your cinch fails! |

I never used one until I watched a cutters off billet break during a run, and the breast collar kept everything in place long enough for him to get stopped and get off safely. I use them all the time now. |

| I have stopped using breast collars for the most part in everyday riding, but I will always use a back cinch. Too many times seeing them pop up on the back of the horse and watching it go up and down smacking them on the back drives me insane I do use a breast collar on my treeless during runs but not for slow work, trail riding, etc. My treed saddles I don't usually use a breast collar on |

Location: Where the pavement ends and the West begins Utah | Imo my cinch. Is not necessary.most of the time it's really lose. I think about removing my back cinch cause in my low turns my horses back legs really climb. I have a400 breast collar ,cause my saddle fits so well Ileave it loose cause the wither strap holds it up and I don't want my dirty horse to get it all sweaty. I think I'll run bareback cause all this tack is so expensive......I have some ocean property sale.....Ask Martha,Mary,Kristie,Sharon. "Do I need breast collar?" Yes..if you want a check. Yes if you value you and your horses' life.now I will go the other way .your pocket book.your choice.your freedom your life. You choose. |

Location: MO | Or slip sideways. Anything can happen in a run and I would rather be prepared. I had a little mare that wearing a BC would slow her down, she must not have like the feel of it across her chest, never could figure it out...anyway she didn't wear one. She had withers out of this world so her saddle stayed from side to side BUT...there was a few times the saddle slid back slightly to a bit. No matter how tight you would tighten the saddle. |

Charmayne did pretty well without one, so does Fallon apparently...
To each their own. |

Location: Cocoa, Florida | I always wear one to prevent saddle from slipping, I wear mine so it's just above shoulder, not to tight not to loose. Sharon Camarillo demonstrated where one went "properely" in a video and I've done that ever since. If there wasn't a pretty important purpose I'm
Sure no one would wear one. As far as Fallon loosing it to make her horse lighter I don't believe a breast collar would make or break a run, but I guess every ounce counts huh |

| I read all the replies and to me every one just explained their position on breastcollars. I didn't think anyone sounded closed minded. |

Please do remove your back cinch if it's loose. Floppy daylight back cinches are one of my biggest peeves, for one I feel like it must be annoying flopping around, and secondly yes, I can see the scenario of a back foot getting caught in the event of a slip or just one that really gets down. Snug it up (doesn't have to be roper tight) or take it off.
I've got breastcollars on all my saddles...although now that someone mentioned a horse not firing with one on, it makes me tempted to try without it with my little horse... |

I also heard that, and if I am remembering/heard correctly she did NOT. Taylor Jacob did in 2012 or 2013 (I believe???) 16.19 or something along those lines |

YEAH she definitely did NOT LOL
I do love how much more comfortable Baby Flo looks without all that tack mess and fringe hanging off of her. Poor girl can finally concentrate on running. |
