I've read a lot of threads here on the RG topic and am curious what mineral supplements people are using? I'm feeding alfalfa pellets, oats, and RG daily but have been wondering if I'm missing a mineral in there?

Thoughts, suggestions?

I provide a free choice vitamin/mineral to them but they hardly touch it.

I feed an ulcer/calming supplement and offer free choice mineral and salt. I usually only buy one or two blocks a year. They hardly touch it when I am feeding RG.

I use Grostrong mineral for my horses. It comes in a block, loose mineral, or tub form.

Remember, when horses evolved they could not stop at the vitamin pile, the grain pile, or, in most cases, the mineral pile. The minerals that they needed were, for the most part supplied from the roughage that they ate. Assuming that the area where your hay is produced does not have a specific mineral deficiency, and if your horses have optimal hind gut efficiency to digest the roughage in their diet, they will usually get the vast majority of minerals that they need. In addition, a fully functional hind gut makes the water soluble vitamins that they require. When all this is true, most horses will not eat additional mineral supplements, especially poorly made ones, if the rest of their diet is meeting their needs. That is the reason that most horses back off of supplemental vitamins and mineral on a Renew Gold diet. That is a sign that it is working as designed, and so is the horses digestive system. However, you should still keep salt available to them. I personally feed Redmond salt. It is the only supplement that I add.
