Looking at a step-up horse for a teen and need your opinions on price. I think what the owner is asking is in the right ballpark, but not 100% sure. What's fair for this kind of horse? Thanks.

Early teen gelding - well-broke, sound, pretty, fancy color. Runs about a second off national-level horses and has been very competitive in youth organizations, but has only been trail ridden for the past few years. Has also run poles and been used on cattle. A little hot at the gate and in general is not a deadhead, but works fine for the confident intermediate kid I'm shopping for.

What maintenance does this horse have if he is running 3D off the top horses and is consistent then he most likely has some issues that need TLC because he is using himself. Might be the hot at the gate issue that needs investigating. I'm saying this because most people don't realize that you need to fully investigate and vet check horses. You might be paying a cheap price but sometimes all the vetting the owner has done is vaccines and teeth or a "lameness exam" twice a year with the local vet. Sorry but 90% of the time thats not gonna find issues or problems, so be aware when they are priced cheap and the owners aren't very knowledge (i.e. going a lot of had a lot of horses through their barn.)

But lets say this horse's issues have been discovered and he is what he is. A consistent 3D horse can range anywhere from 12k- 7500 depending on mare/gelding, breeding, can it possibly get better, how good of a mind, and your location.

What he did a few years ago would not figure into his price today. IMHO.  He may come back from hiatus as a solid 5D horse...or not at all. You are buying the horse as he is today.

My first question would be why was he turned out for the last few years.   There may be a very legitimate reason, no one in the family competing, etc or that could be a red flag that he was blown up or injured.

I agree with the past two posters I completely read this wrong. If he is being "used as a trail horse" then there is most likely a reason. Especially if he was nice easy going consistent 3D. Most people would sale to get their money back outta him not just let him waste away trail riding.

I looked at a horse that was exactly as you described except he was a perfect gentleman in and out of the arena.  He was priced at 8K which is CHEAP  where I live,  we have a huge demand for safe, same trip kid or week end warriors horses. I  loved that horse but after doing some digging there was a reason he was priced low and had not competed in a few years and I had to pass on him.
