| We are looking at getting a 1999 Ford F350 diesel. The truck has a little over 205,000 on it. It is 4wd and has the 7.3L turbocharged V8. They have receipts showing where the truck has had regular maintenance and appears very well taken care of. It is the Lariat package, but has an updated touch screen radio and some other small upgrades. What would you guys pay for this truck? Would the mileage scare you guys away?
We are upgrading to a larger trailer with living quarters, and therefore need to upgrade from the 2500. The only thing that worries me is the age and mileage, but we have heard that the engines were much better on this year then the 6.0's in the years to follow. We looked at some newer ones with the 6.7L engine but a little more then we want to spend right now I think.
Just would love to hear all of your opinions! It would be pulling an older 4 horse 4 star trailer with LQ hopefully most every weekend in the summer and then probably getting used several times a month during the winter.

| The mileage itself would not scare me for the engine, it's the hang ons that might be more of an issue. Water pump, turbo, brakes, front end etc. I used to put 350K on those engines in 4 years and basically touch nothing except changing the oil. The truck I have now only has 200K on it and is 11 years old and I have done brakes numerous times, front end several, clutch master cylinder, brake lines, 4WD hubs.....a ton of crap that I never had to worry about. Sitting is harder on them than driving them. |

| It looks like they have replaced a lot of parts this past November. Here is a list of things they have receipts for:
-Charge air cooler hose
-exhaust UP pipe kit
-front brake pads
-front brake rotors
-EBP delete kit
-rebuild turbo with billet wheel
-replace turbo up pipes
-alternator
-Valve cover harness with pigtail
-water pump
-hood struts
-belt
-air filter
-tie rods
-injector
-thermostat housing
-some kind of rear seal (hard to make out word)
-ICP sensor
-Upper radiator hose
-coolant

Location: home for the winter...what a dumb idea | How meny injectors? Biggest red flag is that I don't see how many injectors and I don't see a new fuel filter....when you dont change the filers with the injectors it will void the warranty most of the time |

| They replaced 1 injector from what I could see. This truck is listed for $15,000, do you guys think this is a fair price? |

Location: Southeast Louisiana | They probably replaced all that they did because the truck was sitting up a lot. That is low mileage for the age of that truck. My 2000 has a little over 350,000. So, no, the mileage wouldn't scare me at all. It has AT LEAST another 300k miles in it, I'd say. If you take care of it. I have heard of 7.3's with many, many more miles that that and still going strong. Yes, it's hard to start in cold weather.
We have two! Love them!
Whenever I buy (or sell) a used vehicle, I usually look at the private party value on kelley blue book, kbb.com . It's probably worth almost 15k. You might be able to get it for less, you never know. I'd make an offer based on what blue book says. They're great trucks. I would pay blue book price for a well kept one. |

| Our 97 7.3 is like family. Has almost 300K miles and still strong and I pull a trailer almost daily every summer with it and have for 10 years. The biggest fault in these particular trucks is the transmission. It was not built strong enough to hold up to that torque in that motor. We had to replace ours at just around 200K. We just bought a new one and put it in ourselves. Everyone and their brother has a powerstroke around here so all the fellas know how to work on them. Heck, I feel comfortable with those motors lol. The are Ford's shining star and you will love it. I know plenty of people that have close to 500k on those motors around here. |

| i had a 2001 f350 dually 7.3 onl 118,000 miles & dealership paid me $19,000 to get my truck- sold it to a guy on the phone for $22,000
But i would not be concerned with the motor. i sold my truck due to body rail issues & jumped at the chance someone paid me that for it. considering i only paid $12,900 for it 4 years earlier with 89,000 miles on it.
the 7.3 are worth their weight in gold!! but really look the whole truck over before making decision |

It doesn't have a gooseneck hitch, so hoping maybe it didn't get used a lot for hard towing and maybe that helped save on the transmission?
It's nerve wracking buying older vehicles 
Do you guys think looking at a newer (2011 and on) one is worth the price jump? |

It was originally the local bale bed company's show truck, when they were ready to upgrade, I snatched it up as soon as it was a done deal (i work at the dealership they traded with!!) There wasn't a scratch on the bed bc all they used it for was promotion, so it didn't have any use on it n barely any miles!!!!
Love that truck, my husband bought his own truck so I use the Ford to haul with, love it!!!!
And as another poster said "they are worth their weight in gold"!!!!!!!!!!! |

7.3L is the best diesel Ford ever made. I had one all through Highschool and couldn't kill it. My old 7.3L had over 500k miles on it before I replaced the transmission. Only reason I replaced was because I knew it was time. It still ran and drove but with the new transmission it's unstopable.
15k is way over priced in my opinion. It only blue books for less than 5 in perfect condition. However, people have started to ask for older diesels, specifically the 7.3L because of the DEF, deletes, and emissions on new diesels. New diesels MAY last 100k before you have to delete (illegal in most states) and you can't pass emissions tests which you need to do in order to get inspection stickers in most states. People are saying screw all that and buying older diesels that don't have to pass emissions or have DEF added to them to run. My old 7.3L got GREAT gas mileage. Newer diesels without a delete get terrible mileage... All that added together jacks up the market of older vehicles.
The hitch not being present doesn't matter. If there is a programmer on a truck and it's turned all the way up 24/7 and driven by an idiot, that puts more wear and tear on the truck and transmission than just pulling 24/7.

| How do you guys deal with financing older trucks? Have you ever ran into them not wanting to finance something that old?
Also, are the 2009 engines reliable. It has the 6.4L. We kinda have two in mind now. Found the 2009 for about the same price as the 1999. |

Wow that's a great price! Apparently this one is pending sale now... We have started looking 2009 and higher. It's tough to find a good deal! |

Their transmissions were a POS in my opinion. I bought a '97 F350 4x4 new - hadn't even towed with it and first transmission went out before 20,000 miles. It had 5 different ones in it (one was only in long enough to test drive it & it was crap too) before 50,000 miles. One of the Ford dealerships that replaced one of the trannies said it was VERY common for them to be crap. I traded it in because I could NOT sell it to an individual in good faith. (I also tried to get Ford to "do" something about this particular truck since it had so many transmission issues & they blew me off - so will never own another for that reason.) |

Location: down south | We own a 2000 F250 Lariat that my husband and I LOVE. We've owned it since 2002. My husband says he'll never sell it! It's always pulled our horse trailers just fine until we bought a 3-H 4-Star with 12' LQ. We had airbags put on and it pulls fine. But I still worry about the stopping power. I feel comfortable pulling on flat roads but not so much on hills. Other than that, we've had very few problems with it. We did have the transmission replaced once, about a year ago. Our has 120,000 miles. Great truck! |
