In my experience it depends on the horse. My horse prefers something soft like BOT liner or fleece. Right now I am using the BOT pad with a Saddleright. On other horses, I have used 5 Star, Tod Sloan and Classic Equine pad and inhav also used a Won pad. I liked all of these.

I think it depends on the horse, but I really like the Toklat pad I just got!

I use a Best Ever Kush pad 1" thick and also have a BOT liner under. I love my pad and it doesnt cause any soreness but i do notice that it shifts a bit after a long work out. I am wanting to try a 5 star since i see so many good things about them.

I have a 3/4" and a 1" 5 star pads with their liners. I have tried the Best Ever, and although I liked it for a while, it started separating and falling apart pretty early on. I am not one to spend a lot on a pad, so was sorely disappointed with the Best Ever. But the 5 stars are holding up amazingly and are the only pads I will spend THAT much on.

I love my Tod Slones. I thought about switching to 5 Star, because of all the excellent reviews, but I haven't been able to find a person who can tell me the difference between a Slone and a 5 Star. The price difference between the 2 for a basic no frills pad is $50. I think they are both very good quality, and that you are paying more for the available upgrade options that 5 Star offers. And they obviously market their products very well.

I really like mt 5 Stars but I think it depends on the horse. I had one that I only rode in a Molly Powell pad. Just the way she was shaped it worked best for her.

GLP, it's a roohide.  I am pretty smitten with it!  Have looked for a used one for years and finally found one I could afford and was in my size.  Now I have two of them.

I think I pretty much have or have had most saddle pads available....5 star, best ever, SPH, equipedic, saddleright, classic equine, air-ride CJ, cashel, old style ricotti, no brand wool, diamond wool black, corrector, lami-cell FG collection, supracor...I'm sure I am leaving some out.

My favorite is the Diamond Wool Black with a 13" cutback that Caldwell Saddlery carries that is designed for a horse with a long wither.  It is the only saddle pad that allows the saddle to stay up where I want it.

I guess you haven't talked to the right person then!
The simple difference is that 5 Stars are the only felted wool pad with as close to 100% virgin wool as you can get in them (92-98% and balance being reworked (used) wool) - and are rated as F10 & F11 - while the Slones have only 55% virgin wool, with 45% reworked wool and synthetic materials and rated at F15.  International Felting Standards show that the F11 felted wool has a compression rating of 6 psi & 200 psi tensile strength (pounds per square inch) and F15's compression rating of 2 psi and 75 psi tensile strength.  (So 5 Stars have a much higher compression/concussion rating).  Also based on research from the Felt Mfg'ers Council of America, the higher the virgin wool content of the wool felt, the better the wicking ability.
The much higher concentration of the virgin wool is what "creates" the higher pricing if they are higher than the Slones - I've not checked in awhile so can't personally comment on that.  I do believe you can only get the gray and black with Slones, while you have a wide range of colors & options from 5 Star.
If I can help anyone with any questions about 5 Stars, or if you are wanting to order, I am 5 Star's designated BHW dealer too.

Thank you! I have asked and asked and no one has been able to provide that information including several other 5Star dealers!

My horses do well in their 5 Star pads! Their saddles fit great so I only use the 1/2" thickness.
