I have a gelding that just turned 12. The past two years we struggled as far as barrel racing goes and found out at the end of last year that he had bad hocks. We had him injected and he seemed to be getting somewhat back to his old self and running a better pattern. I was wondering if anyone knows or has experience with using the "everclear injections". I was told by the vet that they help the joint fuse faster. I just wanted to get an opinion before doing it. This horse is such a good boy the first year I owned him we were in the 1D then we struggled for 2 years and I worry that he will never be the same. I fear he might always think the pain is going to come when he goes around a barrel but he's such good horse and loves the barrels so much. Honestly I can't see him doing any other discipline. Any suggestions anyone has would be great.

Take him to a legitimate performance vet, even if you have to travel 6-10 hours one way.

Only the severest cases end careers, and there's lots of things you can do.

I did take him to a Sport vet when I had his injections done. I took him to GameTime Sport Medicine. He has a pretty bad left hock but he did manage to get the injection in even though it was extremely difficult. He suggested for next time to try Everclear gain alcohol because it's suppose to help fuse the hock. I was wondering if anyone has had success with it because there isn't much on it. As far as his career goes I wasn't really referring to the injury it's self as being career ending. I was referring to him not being the same in the head because he went so long with the pain I'm afraid he has associated the barrels with the pain. Im unsure if there is a way to help him over come that. I guess in a way only time can tell. Thank you for your response I truly appreciate it. The more information I get the better.

Do u have him on a good - injectable- joint supplement? Like adaquan, pentason, glucosamine, etc? As far as you question, I have heard of this but don't know anyone who has had it done

Private message Bold Hollis (or if you have Facebook, Summer Terry). The alcohol fusion destroyed her horse's hock and she eventually had to put him down. I wouldn't recommend it.

If you decide to do this, it's obviously very important to make sure there's no communication between lower and upper hock joints in your horse. I assume all vets that are doing that but, you can't be too safe in making sure.

I won't do alcohol more of a chance of wrecking the high motion joint.

I would go to surgical fusion, there are two types, laser, and dremmel.

I have done laser on 3 horses all had great success with the laser.

Dr Hague I believe was the co author on the surgical laser research, this is who I would go to if I was in the USA, I believe he is in Oklahoma.

Can you post the x-rays of your horse's hocks?

I went through a fusing hock (on the right side) with my Red. Injections helped but didn't take the pain away 100%. So we supplemented with Previcox. (Although now, I suppose you would use Equioxx.)

Fortunately, he is fully fused now on the right side (he is turning 11 this year). Some horses will fuse on their own -- some won't. I don't have any experience with the injections to force fusion ... but you could look into trying Equioxx for pain management as an alternative.

I would give it some time first. They may fuse on their own after being injected.
I wouldn't do alcohol.
Dr Hague did our laser fusion - it did fuse where it was supposed to, but also fused above which ruined my 30K horse!!! It just happened prob doesn't on most but it happened to me. If I had it to do over again I would have done IRAP and just waited. I'm letting my friend raise babies out of her.
Really take your time and think about it before you jump in because I was told do the fusion and you'll be done- and we are! lol

Thank you everyone for all the feedback! I truly appreciate it! You all have given me a lot to think about and talk about with the vet!

Me too. The laser fusion failed to fuse, I had a crippled horse.
We drilled them in an effort to get them to fuse. We're about half way fused after 2 years, but he's sound enough to run with Previcox. I rest him as needed.

If I had to do it again, I'd probably just use shock wave and irap. Or just go straight to drilling.
