I have the opportunity to purchase a linebred doc olena, peppy San badger mare to cross on my Chasin Firewater, DTF stallion, but I've never had a cow bred barrel prospect and I'm not sure if this cross will produce something marketable? Is this a cross you would consider when purchasing prospects? Your opinions are much appreciated...Thx

I'd buy one. I love my little peppy san bred gelding, he's small but doesn't need much rate and doesn't waste time in his turns, he's hanging right in there with the our local rodeo winners so far this year. We were just talking about how we'd really like to find a cow/run cross for out next prospect.

I have a Hickory Highbrow right now, and I love him. Easiest horse to break and train. I also think that if you found a Metallic Cat or Highbrow CD and crossed that on CF or DTF, that would make them very marketable. Highbrow CD's and MC's are killing it in both ends of the arena right now.

My mare is Peppy San Badger bred. She was GREAT as a 2 year old, a little kid even sat on her with a saddle as a yearling (held of course!!). As a 3 year old she liked to test you every time you rode and usually crow hopped once or twice. 4 years old- same deal. Now as a 8 year old we could through a beginner on her. She would have stopped her "tests" earlier had I ridden her more.

My little mare I have now is cutting bred on top and running bred on bottom. She isn't big, she isn't the fastest, and there's not much fancy stuff on her papers. But, she has HEART! After the train wreck of a gelding I had before her I will take slower and tons of heart over him any day.

Good luck.

I absolutely love my cow bred horse. She is out of Shining Spark/Topsail Cody. She has been the easiest mare to train. I would love to cross her with some "run". Here is her pedigree..

Love, love, love cow breeding! Doc Olena, Peppy San and Docs Hickory are my faves.  I was shocked to hear this but Peppy San Badger is strongly suspected of carrying the PSSM Type 2 gene so I would definitely get her tested for it before breeding her.  Equiseq (www.equiseq.com) is a new lab that offers genetic testing for the different PSSM variants so you no longer have to have a muscle biopsy done.
If she tests clean, I don't think you could go wrong with this cross - I would definitely be interested!

I have a nice peppy san badger mare who is flat out wicked in the barrel pen. Plus she's so nice to rope on, put kids on, be a baby sitter just a great mare. took to everything easily and was running strong in no time. My friend also has a nice high brow cat mare that is already running 4d with less than a year under her belt.

I was shocked and saddened too!
Thinking back though, we had a really nice local stud that was by him that we bred mares to and they were incredible until they were about 7+ and then they always had something "off" about them and never made it back to the level they were at or back to the arena at all.

The new Equiseq technology will make identifying carriers easier. Currently some well-known names of PSSM2 suspects are Midnight (Peppy San Badger, Jet Deck, Easy Jet and so on) and Sonny Dee Bar among others.

Nasrullah is highly suspected of being a P3/MFM carrier which is also quite concerning since he is very prominent in many running QH pedigrees through Beduino, Azure Te, Indian Hemp, Bold Ruler...

One of my favorite mares is  Peppy san Badger bred . she is 9 years old. worried about all the new info on PSSM, thinking she is old enough to say she dodged that bullet. I would read and learn about PSSM. Thinking it will change the breeding game tremendously???

Look at "Bling" so sad and painfull
