So I made the mistake of buying a DTF own daughter out of a mare sired by Mr. Jess Perry in LA. She looked beautiful from her pictures. So I bought her and sent her off to training...Well I get her home to NC and she looks like she just came off a trailer for a kill pen. I had my vet look her over and he said she is fine but has been badly abused and not fed. She has ribs showing, ewe neck, etc and is extremely head shy. What can I do to get her fattened up and looking better ASAP?

I sent you a pm. I would treat for ulcers, deworm and check teeth. Make sure those are all good, and then you will know she is set to be able to utilize what you feed her. The head shy, I would just love on her as much as you can. Let her know you aren't going to smack her around.

I would take pics from every angle and post them on my FB, blasting the "trainers" names while I was at it.

I am so sorry this happened to you.  I sent my gelding off for 45 days to get ridden.  He was FAT when he left and when I went to pick him up he was a bag of bones.  Same thing - trainer tried to tell me he had a round bale in front of him 24/7, got grain, etc.  I called her BS and while I never got a dime back of my money - I don't believe my horse EVER got ridden in those 45 days either, (or fed for that matter - he tips the scale at over 1350 in shape and when I picked him up he had last AT LEAST 200 lbs.)  word of mouth is a powerful instrument.  She is a POS as far as I am concrerned and took clear advantage.  For the record - I did my homework and checked around and got good feedback on this "trainer."  NEVER again.  I hope your horse is okay.  So sorry you are dealing with this.

I feel for you and my heart breaks for your filly. But I will tell you that this will be a very long and slow process. And I hope that you are righted by the "trainer" for making a nice horse to be this sort of mess. But I will also add that I have a GD of MJP and she was about fried on the pattern and just plain pleasure riding when I got her. She was thin and her teeth were a hot mess. I took care of the health issues and let me tell you that what I've found is that this line is very smart, forgiving and has a lot of willingness to try and please. I can't speak for the DTF line as I've never owned one of those. But the MJP should come around with time and patience. They do develop a bond with a person with a gentle hand. Mine is becoming a one person horse. Good luck in rehabbing your filly.

I am going to send you my formula that I have been using. A friend saved a 27 yr old mare in Sept who had just foaled and was probably 200-300 lbs under weight. Her baby was only 35 lbs but they both survived and look great the vet recently checked on them and wanted to know about what we had been feeding. Of course good hay is first and foremost.

It is sad that your horse went through this.

I am writing this in hopes to educate horse owners.

When picking out a trainer make sure you go to the place, look at the other horses, even ask how long they have been there, that way you will have a good idea of how they treat the horses.

Have open communication with the trainer, do call every day, once a week is a good starting point. Direct the conversation, ask how she is settling in to the program, how is her body condition doing.

Be prepared for the horse to loose some weight, the stress of training can cause horses to loose weight, and if the trainer is spending time on them, they will loose some.

Figure out if the trainer will feed food you bring, done expect a discount on the bill.

The trainer I use her fees include good quality hay, anything else I need to pay for. I take over feed, and the trainer texts me if she is running low.

I also send a wormer to be given a week or two into training, I find after the transition from not being displined to the training regime they are more susceptible.

I am so sorry for your girl and for you. Some people make me want to slap the snot out of them; they don't deserve to be around these magnificent animals, much less actually put their hands on them. Sending y'all nothing but good thoughts and best wishes for getting lined back out.

How many times has this same story been covered on this forum??  Ultimately the horses condition is the responsibility of the owner.  I do not understand this mentality of dumping a horse at the trainers and not physically checking on their welll being.  A horse does not decline to a "bag of bones" over night.
