My mare is 19 this year and this is her 4th foal. She has never had any problems. Her last filly was born in 2015, she carried her 357 days. The 2 foals before that were live cover and approximately 350 thru 359 days. My husband wants me to take her to the vet, but she is only 361 days so not really overdue. She seems miserable just because she is so big, but she is eating and walking around, not acting like she is having any problems. So of course I googled it and now I'm worried seeing all the problems with mares going to long!

When do y'all get concerned over a mare going to long and have a small foal??

I personally wouldn't be too worried just yet. If she goes another week or more I would start getting concerned and getting the vet involved.

My mare just went 360 and foaled a healthy colt at 22 years old. My vet knew and said not to worry as long as you could see foal moving and mare seemed normal

Well said !!
Older mares take longer .. a year is normal on a lot of older mares ..

I don't pay any attention to waxing of teats once I see a bag
has formed ..
I pay attention to how much the vulva has increased in length
and if I see small droplets of rose colored water ..
mare usually foals within 24 hours ..
****************************************************
FB is full of crazy people with cameras watching their mares
and running out and interfering with the birthing ...
crazier than crazy with total lack of common sense ... lol
***************************************************
Mare had her baby with an audience and one human instantly
went in with a towel and roughly scrubbed the baby down
and dried it and forced it to stand ...
mare got up and smelled baby .. licked it ..
and started refusing foal to get near her...
the mare needs to lick a wet foal in order to
claim it as hers .. so stay out of
the way and let mare and baby lay for
20-30 minutes if they want to ... this is normal ..
Mare is giving time for blood out of the sack to drain into baby
while she is extracting the after birth from inside of her.
Meanwhile the little circle on the umbilical cord is staying
soft while the tube is drying some ... this allows the cord to
break in that spot when mare or foal stands up ...
video ended ??
**************************************************
Another was right there when baby came out ... she grabbed the
baby... ripped the sack off and started trying to get it to stand ...
she struggled for about 10 feet and baby was standing ...
you could see it was very weak and the afterbirth was still full of
blood the baby should have had it inside of it ... mare got up
dragging the heavy afterbirth and lady tried to pull it out of the
mare ... that is a major no no !! Hired man came in with pocket
knife and cut the heavy bulky part off ... then blocked the mare
against the wall and eased the weak baby into position and
let baby nose the udder without messing with the foal ..
meanwhile mare's contractions dropped the after birth
and foal was busy nursing ...
happy ending .. ..
*************************************************
Another had her stall knee deep in shavings and baby was up and
already dried off when I started viewing the stream ... woman
was in the stall with her stupid video phone/camera and foal was following
her around thinking she was her mama and the mare was getting
really concerned ... this went on for 30 minutes and foal was losing
strength and flopping down in the deep shavings .. lady would make
foal get up and of course foal continued to follow the woman ...

I sent a msg to halter the mare and get yourself out of the stall and
park mare's right side against the stall wall and let baby find its
dinner before it got any weaker dealing with the deep shavings
and following you around (shaky legs and pasterns had let down) ..
bang!! video disappeared ............. 4-5 days later she posted that
baby had been at the vets for 3 days and was back home and nursing ..
*******************************************************

Use common sense .. stay out of the way and mare and babies instincts
will make for a happy occasion ... GOOD LUCK MARE OWNERS

She is eating good and acts like she feels ok, other than being huge. I know horses don't really have "due dates", but in my mind she is overdue, lol PLUS I have never spent this much on a breeding before, so that adds extra stress. (a streak of fling)

I ain't gonna lie, I do wish I had some kind of camera at the barn, but she has access to the pasture so I would still probably miss it. lol. I absolutely agree with you about no audience and let nature takes its course. I want to walk out there and see everybody ok

Her pedigree!! http://www.allbreedpedigree.com/goin+out+cattin2

I guess she's a bay? So happy to finally have her on the ground! I'll post pictures as soon as they are resized!

This gray mare has had 4 foals; gray with gray stud; sorrel with black stud; buckskin with palomino stud; now looks like bay with roan stud.

I think you are right! She has the roan hairs on her butt and her back. I don't see any gray hairs around her eyes or on her ears yet, so maybe she will stay roan.
